1993 850 Glt Stereo On All The Time

My car stereo stays on even when the key is out of the ignition.

I just installed a new Pioneer DEH-P7900BT stereo into my 1993 850 GLT. I already have the same stereo in my 1995 850 Turbo and it works fine. I used the BHA-9920 wiring harness adapter, which appears to be the exact same one as in my 1995. Once everything was spliced in and hooked up I plugged in the stereo and it works fine except that it stays on even when the key is out of the ignition. That doesn't happen with my 1995 even though it is the same exact stereo and appears to be the same exact wiring harness adapter.

Any ideas?

The only connection that I made that was different was the blue wire which has a tab which says something like "remote control"...or something like that. It came with a flat connector and since I didn't have the male end to fit it I just spliced the wire directly. I thought that might be it but when I unplug that same wire in my 1995 all it does is stop the antenna from going up...so it is the antenna remore power control. On the 1993 I even cut that wire just to see if that might allow the stereo to turn off when the key was off but that didn't make a difference.

help me please...this is my girlfriend's car and I hate the idea of her having to remove the faceplate in order to turn the stereo off or else risk running her battery dead.

thanks in advance.

If you used a wiring adapter, all the colors should match right up:

12V Ignition / Acc. . . Red

12V Batt / Memory. . Yellow

Ground. . . . . . . . . . . Black

Power Antenna. . . . . Blue

Amp Turn-On . . . . . . Blue / White

Amp Ground. . . . . . . Black / White

Illumination. . . . . . . . Orange

Dimmer . . . . . . . . . . Orange / White

Right Front (+) . . . . . Gray

Right Front (-). . . . . . Gray / Black

Left Front (+) . . . . . . White

Left Front (-). . . . . . . White / Black

Right Rear (+). . . . . . Violet

Right Rear (-) . . . . . . Violet / Black

Left Rear (+). . . . . . . Green

Left Rear (-) . . . . . . . Green / Black

The good ones even print the function right on the wire!

That is so cool... You DID use a wiring adapter, right?

Yes, I used a wiring adapter...and all the colours matched up...and I even had my identical stereo and wiring adapter from another car to compare it to so I am not sure what is wrong.

Well, it sounds a lot like your switched power has some how become constant.

Just for grins, does the clock keep time? Does it remember station presets?

Just a thought...

Otherwise, time to get a DMM and a wiring diagram out and get to it.

I will double check on the clock and the station presets. Since I am having my girlfriend take the face plate off every time she turns the car off, in order to keep it from draining the battery, it will be interesting if it is keeping its memory. I am guessing if it isn't, that means two of the wires are crossed...although all the colours match up. Since I bought the harness cheap on ebay it is possible they messed up the connections. I should double check to see that the location of each coloured wired within the harness is identical to my other one. If it isn't that could be the problem. - I hadn't thought of that one.

thanks for the suggestions

sounds like red and yellow are backwards

My car had 2 power lines and one acc (2 red, one yellow). Check if maybe the harness is sending the acc wire from your HU to one of those 2.

If you truely swapped all the reds/yellow then the HU should not turn on. the acc wire (at least in my pioneer) is more like a switch and can't power the unit.
