Volvo V70! Timing Belt?

at 101k I had the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner replaced and I had the car towed to the same shop that did the work.

Sorry to hear about your problems...I am actually planing on doing the belt on my new 99 v70 (that Iam picking up tonight) and was wondering if Volvo says that you should replace the water pump at this point?

these pumps tend to last so NO. I do everything at 140k intervals and just the belt and tensioner at 70k. HOWEVER, the 98's have the hydraulic tensioner. Yours is mechanical, hence the longer interval. I personnally would do the pulleys, tensioner and belt if it were me. The pumps just don;t give enough failure rate to warrant the replacement at 100k.

Thanks its good to know. When you say pulleys do mean all the pulley wheels? Sounds like a bit of work, but maybe not.

you have the tensioner pulley, the idler pulley and the belt all under the cover. Those three need to go.

Additionally, i would just spin the serpentine belt tensioner pulley and idler pulley too. If they're noisy get em outta there. If they arent let em go for now. They won' t kill anything if they fail later.

AND, I WOULD BUY OEM from Jamie or Don in Justins signature above. You do not want aftermarket on the really important parts...

FCP is fine for some odds and ends. I would not use any of their "kits" Especially the timing belt kit. It's fine to cheap out on some things, but not parts that will fubar your engine when they fail.

Buy the belt, tensioner, and pulley from a dealer. Pay the price.

As far as the waterpump. Spin it by hand, if it feels smooth that is good. If it has play in it, replace. You should also inspect it with a mirror (the kind the dentist leaves laying around are handy :) ) Check around the pump for any coolant seepage. If you notice any, pull the pump and install a new one.

Anything aftermarket from FCP, IPD, eEuro is gonna be junk.

If you buy the oem parts from FCP (if available) then its fine.

Not true...it could be either or?

I have a 98 at my shop with a failed manual tensioner and bent valves.

agreed 98s are hit or miss with hydrolic one or the manual ones.

I personally like the hydrolic ones since its screw in place install belt pull pin and go .

Only done one manual one so far , but will have two more to go this week alone so
