Bolt Fun!

Today, after I got the engine/transmission out and separated, look what I found!

Makes me wish for one of those "gator bolt" sockets or whatever they're called.

Anyone know what kind of socket I'm looking for?

12 point socket... should be available most places that sell tools - craftsman, snap-on, mac etc... nothing real special ;)

12-point 17mm socket will take those bolts right out. You are probably going to need air tools or a big breaker bar.

You need to use Volvo thread sealant when re-installing those bolts.

Edit: oops, didnt see that you already had the flex plate off :arob:

I haven't pulled the flex plate off yet. That's a picture of the "new" block. I've got pretty decent air setup and "Bertha" my home-made breaker bar. "Bertha" deserves pictures, but that has to wait.

Here's what I've got in my kitchen!

Thanks to Aja (binglax) and to Don at Darrell Waltrip.

I wish I'd given this thread a better name.

Maybe I should give a little background information.

I bought the car in 2004. It's a 1997 850 GLT, had 150K on it, and I paid $3800. This is the 2.4, LPT model.

I put on a 15G, bought an Upsolute tune that I bought used from a guy on the board, Samco Hoses, manual boost controller, home-made 3" turbo back exhaust, other little silly shit. Basically all your "Stage Zero" stuff. It ran a 14.4 with my 200 lb friend in the passenger seat, and a speaker box in the trunk. Fun little daily driver.

I popped a head gasket about 2 years later.

Installed a new head gasket, timing belt, (no tensioner or pulleys that time) but a bunch of other little expensive shit. I didn't know about the "pull down tool" that you're supposed to make to pull the cam cover down onto the camshafts. I used the bolts to pull it down. This was not a great idea. I ended up having to tap ALL the damn bolt holes from 7mm to 8mm and replaced the bolts with larger ones.

I decided that 13 psi was too much, turned it down to 11. BIG STEP DOWN HUH?

2-3 years later the car developed a coolant loss that I couldn't track down. I guess it wasn't leaking enough to pool under the car, the oil looked fine, no huge amounts of steam coming out of the exhaust either.

As I couldn't find the leak, I just kept adding water/coolant and driving it. Eventually the leak grew to the point that I was able to find it. A cracked block. Damn.

Through this board, I found a guy selling a 2.3 block out of a 98 V70R. He said it has <100K miles on it.

I now have the appropriate block, injectors, ecu, camshafts, and turbo to build a stock 2.3 hpt car. I also have another head and cam cover that I'm going to use because I'm a little afraid of the head I already had. Tapping the holes to 8mm is as far as I'm willing to go. What if I strip one? I don't think tapping them much further is possible.

I'm going to put the boost at 12 psi and leave it the hell alone.

My goals this time: Comfortable daily driver, dead ass reliable, decent fuel economy, "pretty peppy".

Jesus, that's an extreme angle on the engine...

 You'll learn when your time comes. Besides, the oil cooler attatches to the side that's in the air, so it makes it easy not to dump the oil pan out the hole.

The tricky part is that you might need to change the angle mid-lift depending on how you do it. Laying below the engine trying to shift it and hoping your jack works is not fun :P

Btw Hilton, I did the same thing when I saw pictures of those plate bolts. Thought I'd need a special socket, but I realized I was just special when someone pointed out its just a 12 point.
