Just a thought, and perhaps some jet engine gurus can tell me otherwise, but why not put a very fine grill over the front of the engines to prevent birds from getting sucked inside? Granted it might just julienne cut the bird.

only reason i could see against that is it would mess up the airflow. also you would have to make the grill strong enough to prevent it from getting ripped off because of the engine, so cost + weight might go up.

I think crippling bird strikes are kinda rare. But with this accident we might see a change. Although I'm not sure since no one died.

Doubt it. Somewhere in the links it was listed how many strikes have been recorded since 1984. The number isn't very big.

There is no point in a grille. If you do put on a grille on and the birds stick to it, the birds will still get sucked in. Also the majority of planes can fly on one engine.

they say he is a hero... but I do not think so... inst his job to keep the plane up and do what it takes to keep it from crashing and killing people?

Go back to watching Fox David.

I'm sure you would have rather of seen the plane land in a Jewish neighborhood instead of the river.

A source familiar with the situation, however, told CNN the pilot reported a double bird strike, but it was unclear whether that meant birds in both engines or two birds in one engine.

I know most commercial turbine engines are designed to be able to ingest a medium sized bird (and a crapton of water) without much complaint, so I'm guessing the two birds were close to each other and hit the same turbine and took it out
