tallahasseegreys
Sorry for the non-volvo question, but my wife has a 94 toyota tercel. She currently runs 10w-30. It burns quite a bit of oil and I want to swith to a thicker oil. I realize that 10w-40 is thicker, but I figured that 15w-40 may be thicker lower temps as well. I got some castrol 15w-40 and it says it's designed for diesels. But it also says it's ok for gas engines.Just wondering what you guys think. C'mon... agree with me here..
Guest peter9000uk
Oils designed for diesel engines have more detergents in them. They are okay to use in petrol engines for a short while, in fact they can help clean sludge build up. I would not recommend using for more than 500-1000 miles
KLS
Most diesel engine oils are dual rated for both diesel and gasoline engines. It will have API CI-4 listed for diesel use and API SL or the new SM listed for gasoline engine use. You can use any of these dual rated 15W-40 oils forever if the viscosity suits.I use 15W-40 in the summer in both my Volvo and my Tundra. Works great in them. The diesel engine oils have a more robust additive package, so they're good for more miles than the lighter-duty conventional gasoline engine oils (not the specialty oils).Ken
Ceenit
I would first recommend trying one of the high mileage engine oils. If you can recondition some of the seals, youll be better off than just putting in thicker oil. If your car is well past the point of no return on engine oil consumption, then anything goes. All this will do is put more strain on the oil pump drive, which may then break and trash the engine totally. Also it will make the engine harder to turn over when cold, which is likely to finish off your battery and / or starter motor. If your engine rattles, try to find out why - it may be something simple, like a worn water pump or valve clearances needing adjustment.
