decker
I may need a new intercooler... it's too soon to tell for sure at the moment but what are my options for a affordable OE replacement or upgraded unit? Anyone have a known "good but used" one? I can test them for leaks at work... out of the car of course. Gratis'

decker
I know... I know... use search...yup... searched... don't think I want a FMIC up here in the salt belt... looks as though IPD has an "replacement improvement" item... kinda spendy though... apparently used one's run about $250ish on feebay... I would prefer not to do that either.anyone know who the "original manufacturer" of these were by chance... I have "sources"

johnloves850's
i'm not really sure how much salt it would take to break down an aluminum intercoolerhonestly, you're going to be doing the same amount of work as getting a new one in
decker
i'm not really sure how much salt it would take to break down an aluminum intercoolerhonestly, you're going to be doing the same amount of work as getting a new one inIt depends if the intercooler has been coated (painted) or not and if you live in an area where the municipalities use a lot of calcium chloride (looks blue) salt on the roads or not. We sell, repair or replace a LOT of CAC's (intercooler's), radiators and a/c condensers around here for cars and especially large trucks (semi's) that the CCSalt eats right through them. It is especially damaging to aluminum. That's one big reason I'd prefer to avoid using a FMIC. Even with some paint on it you'd still be gambling... the a/c condenser takes the brunt of the salt... but a/c condensers are cheap... trust me!At this point I'll just have to keep my eye's open for something... and if anyone that has a known good stock intercooler or an upgraded drop-in that plans to part with one to upgrade to a FMIC... please... let me know!!! johnloves850's
yea i've never seen that kind of salt on the roadsactually where i live we are only allowed to use cindersi guess rock salt or calcium chloride does something to the water?i'm not sure of the exact reasoning, i think because everyone has their own wells, and there is no city waterhave you looked into getting the splash guard to help you protect the bottom of the intercooler, radiator and a/c condenser?although that is usually made of aluminum, so you'd be right back where you started lol
