I just received my re-manufactured transmission from transmission planet in Atlanta.

Their site advertises that they rebuild to OEM specs plus dyno test every transmission.

I got a remanufactured AW50-42LE plus Torque convertor for $850 plus shipping, which is a great deal.

I actually attempted a rebuild myself first, and discovered that the underdrive drum had lost all the friction material which caused the transmission to not shift into fourth, and brought on the flashing transmission arrow of death. I have the Automatic Transmission Service Group rebuild manual, which I thought I followed pretty well, but the rebuild I did didn't fix the problem with new clutches, friction material and a valve body rebuild with new S1, S2, and SL selenoids. Electrical seemed OK per the manual, new PNP switch, properly aligned. So I'm not sure what the problem with the original transmission was.

Now onto today's question: The new transmission's torque convertor has some residual fluid in it, not as much as I'd expect from a dyno tested transmission, but some, maybe they vaccum it out after testing, I don't know (I'll try to find out from the vendor).

The fluid is pretty brown, here is a picture:

What do you think? Did they use some special fluid to test? Did I get an old part that hasn't been re-manufactured? The fluid doesn't smell burnt.

Any advice would be great.

The fluid doesn't look like new transmission fluid. It could be some residual fluid from somewhere. Did they put a new torque converter?

My thinking is that did they test it connecting the input of their motor to the torque converter or directly to the transmission?

Anyways as long as it works now you good to go..

Old tranny fluid would still have a red tinge to it, and it would most certainly smelt burnt...I know because mine did! That almost looks like engine oil.

On a side note post back here with how it goes, my local shop wants $3k for a rebuilt tranny if I can get into one for half that installed from this Transmission Planet place I might do it.
