Pcv System

As long as my ETM is out for an upgrade and I have access to it (also seeing how it's probably never been serviced with 119K on the clock) I'm planning on replacing all of the PCV components today or tomorrow down at the shop. There are a few minor oil leaks and weeps I want to address prior to changing out seals and the like. I have all new OEM Volvo parts to do the job. Anything I'm going to need to look out for while I'm performing the surgery or any special areas of concern I need to inspect. I'll most likely be replacing every piece in the system for peace of mind.

Thanks

use zip ties(185F), dont replace the PTC valve, only replace the hoses and the oil trap... that's all you need to know!

i must be a masochist... i just removed half the dam'n alphabet... and let me tell you "C" was a real treat. http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S70V70-1998-20...8-364-861-4159/

looks like i'll be getting a new thermostat and some radiator hoses tomorrow too... may as well do everything I can while I have the "bucket list" torn apart. Any special tips on making sure the cooling system is free of air once I started putting it back together.

i also got a good look at the timing belt from the backside... it might be original... it might not. it doesn't look bad... but guess what's next on the agenda...??? everything related to the timing belt including the water pump... and i'll put on a new serpentine belt, replace the tensioner and replace any of the idler pulleys while i'm in there. a few hundred bucks and my time isn't worth the chance of it going buh-bye on me!!!

tearing into stuff and figuring it out aren't anything new to me... but so far my first few weeks of Volvo ownership are... well... let's just say "educational"

Yeah Idono about that hose "C" it's so expensive! I would like to look into alternatives on replace that one.

i bought every piece from my friend at the Volvo dealer... if not for the banjo fittings and the pipes being coated in asbesto's, pistachio pudding and bondo... i bet it would be cheaper. i probably didn't "have to" replace it... but as long as i'm in the neighborhood...

oh... i did manage to fub'up the wastegate actuator vacum hose... any thoughts on this? i'm not going to order a bunch of samco hose right now to replace a 24" piece... but is it just good old fashioned vacum hose or something "special" i should get from Volvo. the thing was baked onto the fitting... and i was being quite gentle. ALSO... is there ANY advantage to using Samco upper and lower radiator hoses other than appearance?

Samco turbo hoses from Viva should be here by thursday... not sure about the ETM.... but i've got plenty of work to keep me busy right now. (i got whatever color George had left)

this is all i bought

Shipped 1 of 1 1271653 (Oil Trap Inlet Hose) $5.90

Shipped 1 of 1 1271654 (Oil Trap Inlet Hose (from head)) $18.90

Shipped 1 of 1 1271988 (Oil Trap) $29.90

Shipped 1 of 1 8653339 (Oil Trap Exit Hose (to block)) $2.99

personally i don't care if that "C" part got clogged, since att that did was recirculate the fumes back into the intake and then cloggin up the ETM. Acording to the dealer that's why the ETM need a cleaning! lol

STOP BUYING STUFF. you got hosed from viva? i mean hoses from viva? PM Sig, from styling motors on this forum and he can hook you up with hoses, coolant and turbo. also vacuum kits too. plus when you become a supporting member you get better % discounts from him!

You do realize that if that hose gets clogged then there go the seals correct? the PCV system doesnt do jack stuff without that hose working 110%. That Hose IS the life blood of the system.

Think about it, if that hose get's clogged then you have NO ventilation. All the system is doing is chillin out on the side of the block doing nothing.

This is the one part that I could see cleaning due to it's cost. So if you can blow through it at a good value and it's not all coked up then it is probably fine. BUT if it's cracked, brittle, coked full of crap and can't be cleaned out well enough then it's time to replace it!

I'm totally for making this hose out of whatever you an find since it's so damn expensive. It's all up to you but this is a key part in the whole system.

Just keep an eye on it, if you notice a lot of pressure in the system when you pull the dipstick then you know what the issue is.

I agree with Bingy, seems you could replace that long hose with several different size silicone hoses...as for the PTC valve, some type of adapter that would allow a connection of the silicone, then put all of them through a larger silicone conduit if need be. Heck, you could even cut short sections for the oil trap to the block- Just sayin' it should be possible.

no way dude... the rocket scientists at Volvo that engineered these space-ships put it on there for a reason... and they buried the prick while they were at it. but it IS crucial to the pcv system and i have weeping seals and gaskets in some spots that might be caused by the old tired out pcv system... this might "fix" them... or it might not. the pcv system is CRUCIAL in these cars... it's even more crucial in our Saab that the ENTIRE pcv system operates correctly or *ka-bOOm* bad chit happens.

remember... pcv = positive crankcase ventilation

next... the Samco's from Viva were on sale for less than IPD or fleabay... i guess i got the red one's $139.99 http://www.vivaperformance.com/catalog/pro...products_id=135 i also ordered this at the same time... for when i get back by the turbo... http://www.vivaperformance.com/catalog/pro...products_id=779

i'm a NOOB to Volvo's... so shoot me... but i'm just spreading the wealth :idiot:

now... you need to get your a$$ back out into the shop... take out the fan/shroud... remove the ETM you just put in eleven times... and fix your pcv system immediately!!!

Here's the deal. I always say replace the whole system. Although that is with the 93-98 ones which are like 25 bucks vs this thing that's around 150!

So there must be a better way...

not really... may as well do it right. the only option i see would be creating an entirely new hose that would run from the trap and be routed back to the tube from the air cleaner to the turbo... thereby avoiding removing the coolant lines and banjo bolts.

hey... there you go... wanna go into business together with me?... we could probably sell 30-40 of them... well 26 to Justin, 1 to Steve and the rest to the other 13 people that are tightwads and don't want to tear all of this crap apart just to run what's essentially a fat new vacum line.
