Xemodex Inc. Non-contacting Etm With Das

I've been watching Volvo's on and off the past few years and have been lurking the message boards learning what I could, seeing what was out there and gathering information for my decision. Early on in the process I was leaning towards a P2 V70R ot P2 T5-M but after weighing the purchase prices and knowing I'd want to make changes and upgrades I nixed the idea and started looking at 2000 MY and down V70R's, V70T-5's, Rs, and T5R's'. I realized in time that I really liked the '98-00 V70R for it's AWD and classic yet updated look. So the search began and I started realizing the '98's were the way to go mainly due to the ETM issue's the '99-00's had... which seemed like a real PITA. Let me tell you... "good" '98's for a fair price are hard to come by. Then just around the holidays this year I was trolling along here at VolvoSpeed and stumbled into the "FWD/AWD 1999 and Later" section. There was a thread about a non-contacting ETM from a company called XeMODeX in Canada. I decided to read on and learned quite a bit. Another VS member basically stated "it looks like '99's & '00's are fair game again" That's when I decided to start considering the '99 & 00's again.

I finally found a car I liked based on what the owner stated... called and emailed the owner and started picking his brain as any educated consumer (and as someone who has been involved in automotive reapir for nearly twenty three years) should. The car was what I wanted for the most part but after going down my checklist I realized it was in need of some normal maintenence that I could do and that many of the "mod's" I would want had already been done. Then he told me about the yo-yo-ing idle and because I had read over and over about the ETM issue's I knew exactly what it was... or at least I was assuming so. The "yellow label" ETM that was in the car was waving goodbye. I ran the VIN# with the local dealer and he told me the car had an open campaign for the ETM software update and that the car was covered until April of 2009. I started weighing my options and started a few threads to get feedback here on VS and on V70R.com. My concern was... if the dealer does the software upgrade OR ends up putting in a new ETM... or ??? will they wipe out the RICA computer upgrade the previous owner had performed. The answer and general consensus was a resouning and emphatic YES. That's when I made my decision the remove my ETM and send it in to XeMODeX. I contacted Chris and spoke with him about the procedure and what the process involved. He also alerted me to the fact that the product now carries a LIFETIME WARRANTY. I told him then and there "SOLD" and decided to pull it out. (That's a whole 'nother adventure I wont get into in this thread nor will I get into all of the other pieces I chose to change or upgrade while my ETM was out.) I pulled it out last Friday and took it to the Post Office. Seeing how it's an "extra" car for us and that I'm going to go through it with a fine toothed comb before we put it into service I sent it on the international "slow boat" off to Canada for $44. It didn't matter very much to me when it got there or when I recieved it back. To my surprise on Wednesday I recieved a call from XeMODeX saying my ETM was done and that they would ship it out that day. Huh... What? I told them I was in no hurry to get it back as I had a lot of other things torn apart and that if possible I wanted to save shipping charges. They shipped it to me via FedEx and on Friday afternoon... low and behold... when I came back from lunch it was sitting on my desk! One week from door to door? Wow... amazing! When I need something quickly... I typically get the complete opposite for results.

To make this already long story shorter... I wrapped up all of the other repairs I had going on with the car late last night and went back down to work this morning to complete this part of the car's rehab back to reliable transportation. The ETM went in without a hitch and I buttoned the car back up. I then opened the drivers door and crossed the fingers of my left hand and turned the key with the right... it fired right up... and the idle was smooth as butter on a hot day in July. Seeing how I had been doing a bunch of other work I just let it sit there and idle while I inspected the rest of my work for leaks or anything else wrong or overlooked. Nothing... hooray. The car is still idling smoothly. I proceeded to pick up tools and discarded parts and to wash my hands. Came back a few minutes later and the car had stepped off "fast idle" and into "idle" mode. Purring right at 850rpm... like a kitten. Grabbed a shoplight and did a few more quick inspections and stood there to watch and listen to the fruits of my labor. Nothing... still. I was stoked. I decided to take the car for a quick idle and throttle learning session which often has to be done. I ran the car through many different RPM cycles and took it nice and easy. Not a hiccup or hitch... Nothing!!! At this point it was time to test the right pedal... and the car seemlessly took off like a shot from a cannon. I headed back to the shop (smiling of course) and pulled it back onto the hoist. A few more quick checks while it's idling away like and I turned it off. Then... pushed the key right back in and fired it off again... no problems... so I called it a day.

At this point I am a more than satisfied customer and now feel totally comfortable saying to anyone that owns a Volvo that has an ETM issue... your fears are over... worry no more.

There are many threads on the web about Volvo and their ETM "issues"... I'm just happy to report that there is a solution.

THIS IS THE SOLUTION----> http://www.xemodex.com/xemodex_012.htm
