It doesnt have to be a Volvo shop, it could be the shop down the street that works on cars for 45 an hour. Like I said, it's like changing the oil in your engine.

Oh, I meant to get a 2nd opinion on the tranny before we do anything else with the car. I called around and some of them refuse to do a tranny flush because it's a Volvo. >.<

All right, it's time to bring this back from the dead.

Anyways, there were a bit of family complications and stuff, but we're gonna be calling the dealer to do a checkup on the transmission. I believe they charged about $100/hour...

Def. bring it to a volvo dealer to get it checked out. Hell, if you feel like driving to Waterloo, I'm a tech there and I can probably get you a discount on the labour and I'll look at the car myself.

Best way to diag a tranny is to scan for codes and test the solenoids. As for your mechanic saying that the transmission is 2/3rds dead, he's smoking something fierce. 2/3 dead on a transmission to me is grinding away like a bastard and having mad shift flares. The transmission in your car rarely blows up. As for the volvo trans fluid, yea, very expensive (4L = $90CAD), but I swear by it... mainly because I work there :P . But there are aftermarket fluids that get the job done right (BG Synthetic trans fluid seems to be ok).

Get the fluid and a long funnel and do as follows: Disconnect the top trans line (right under the cold air pipe to air filter), put a hose from the rad to a measurable bucket. Put 4 litres of fluid in, flush 4 out, put 4 in, flush 4 out, put 4 in, flush 4 out, put 4 in, flush 4 out. Install new clip and seals ($20 at dealer) and you're good to go after checking (if you measured, adjustment shouldnt be necessary).

Now if it's just having trouble going into reverse, flush could fix the issue if your fluid is extremely black, or a PNP might be in order...

Don't let some goon out of a $40/hour garage tell you a tranny is shot, may as well spend the money to get a proper diag from a dealer, and like i said, if you want to swing by waterloo, I'll look at it for you. But if no DTCs, black fluid, I'll recommend a flush first. So do the flush, test it out, and if it's still acting up give me a vists ;)

4 liters in, 4 liters out is not the right ratio (the transmission will be gurgling after the first 4 out). It should be 2 liters in and out...several times.

You asked how to do the flush- it's very easy. You can do it yourself with just a few tools (write-up with pictures below):

Do your math before posting please. 4 Litres in = 4 Litres overfilled, 4 litres out = normal level again. and repeat. Will not gurgle because it's always 4 litres overfilled. 1+1 = 2

So what you can charge him $100 for the same thing

No, would rather a volvo dealer look at his car with clean tranny fluid and try to run some tests to double check. If I were in his shoes I'd rather spend $100 to have peice of mind. Correct answer vs bogus answer. If any mechanic ever used the line "Your transmission is 2/3 dead, drive it until it explodes" I would never go back there again.
