2000 S70 Se Dying Tranny

When have you seen a valve body go bad on these vehicles and how did it go bad?

Generally from lack of maintenance. You get crap fluid stuck in there which causes the solenoids to "pop" open due to more pressure required. More pressure to force a shift, the harder the clutch bands get applied, which gives you the harsh shifts. The fact that it is still shifting harshly, but still shifting means the trans. is in good mechanical order.

Hah AMD Auto...... my family almost bought an 850 Turbo from... I THINK the owner's son (or at least I think he was..... I remember that he was affiliated with them in some way)....... it was total LOL.

This guy: look

That's them. We did the majority of our services there cus we don't like paying so much $$$$$$$$ at the dealer. But then again, who does...

Weird. We've been there for over 10+ years and they've usually been pretty good to us. However, this transmission and brakes issue is giving us a big headache. Oh, we're Chinese too....lol

The guy at Volvo Villa and girl at Volvo Unionville said that it's pretty hard for a car to move when the transmission is 2/3 dead. Hell if he's saying our transmission is dying cus the kickdown is rough, it's been rough since day 1. Whenever the car kicked down, you could hear the coins in the coin slot just under the Hazard button hit each other. Btw, I did a couple P to L the other day. Not a lot, maybe like 5.

@Psycho. I won't be going to Waterloo. Too far and not worth it. Just the gas money would offset any discount you could offer.

I bet the forums $10 that the tranny fluid is probably brown, if not black. But who cares, it's getting checked on Monday at Volvo Unionville. So we'll move on from there after Monday's check at the dealer. Around $120/hour is reasonable, since it should take only one hour. Maybe I can get my mom to look and/or test drive the C30 or Audi A4.

Fluid changes should take care of this after a while. Gunk does build up but not that badly from what I have seen. For an example, I just tore down an 50-42LE tranny that had been run for 180K without a fluid change. It burned through two clutch packs and a needle bearing. When I split the valve body it was slightly tarnished but not to badly.

Without much base on what generally goes wrong with these trannys I can't be 100% on anything. In my personal opinion you can get the valve bodies to clean themselves out with fluid changes and possibly an additive IF the valve body is even in question.

I will know more as I can get more AWs apart to take a closer look at.

Took the car to Volvo Unionville today, and got it back at around 12. Just got around to posting now.

Basically, they checked the car, took it for a spin, blah blah, and they said the car's fine. Transmission seems to be fine. Tranny fluid is brown (I saw) and it doesn't smell burnt. Apparently, this important battery cable was like corroded and getting destroyed, and that coulda been causing tons of problems with the car, so that was fixed. Then the transmission mount was cracking, so my mom went and got that changed as well. I could get the service record if need be and post it all in detail. Basically, it costed us $500+ to fix these stuff.

Wow expensive but better then a tranny...

Now was it that hard :P

Get that fluid changed out!

Haha way better. I'll post the details tonight when I get the service records.

It was very hard....You don't know how hard it was to convince her to take it to the dealer to get it checked.

We'll change the fluid later after like two more oil changes. It's just light brown.

It should be nice and pink, any brown is not good... hydrualic fluid needs to be 100% to get good solid shifts.

I'm glad that you talked her into it, I hope you do come back more often for advice and your mom will listen to you more due to our advice.

Am I aloud to say the S word now :)
