Can Your Celly Do 3g To Wifi Tethering?

Saw a VZ Storm thread here the other day and was wondering if any one else here has a phone that will do 3G tethering (WiFi optional)? [don't think the storm does, iirc]

I have a G1 running JF's 1.41 RC33 firmware (root access) and the tethering is awesome...

Ran a quick bandwidth test and got 895kbps down and like 300 up. So now, my car is a rolling wi-fi hot-spot!

Got a G1? How do you like that cowbell app?

seriously though... root the phone and let the games begin. If you need help, I can walk you through it.

Walk me through it, what do I need to do? This turns it into a router? I have the same phone ...

I can tether my EV-DO Rev0 phone via BT or USB to my laptop. 1.5Mbits symmetrical. If I had a RevA capable phone it would pull 3Mbits. No cost for data via Sprint.

When I had a Linux machine do my local routing, I hooked a phone up via USB and was able to provide my whole network with data access via the phone.

ErikS & Javadoc.

Have you got the over the air update to RC33 yet? you can tell by looking at the google search bar... it will have a microphone button for voice search (<---kicks ass btw).

Basically, what you do is reflash the firmware DOWN to RC29 (it’s the one with the security hole). Then, while the hole is active, you enable root access. Then you can update to JesusFreke's firmware (his firmware closes the superuser hole). After that, you will have a TON of new features including multitouch zoom in the native browser! Themes will be available shortly once the developers have had time to make them compatible with the firmware.

anyone really want to do this to their G1, PM me and I'll walk you through it.

Drew (dongle) did it with his iPhone on the way to GA. Pretty damn fast!

What phone is that? …

yeah.. sprint's CDMA would be ideal … but I've been quite surprisingly impressed by TMO's HSPDA... now if there coverage would get better before Sprint blows everyone away with WiMax.

I can tether my LG Dare but if the bandwidth gets too high they get suspicious....

Once I exceed a 'nominal' value even with the unlimited data plan they'll start charging you for tethering (~$30 month IIRC).

I hear ya....Verizon does not play around. I heard that TMO's got a 3GB a month cap before you get flagged.... I guess we'll see shortly

I did it on the last four phones I had. Sanyo 8100, Samsung A460, Samsung A900 and now the Samsung Ace (i325, Windows Mobile). The Ace originally had WM 6.0, but with the 6.1 upgrade I can tether without using 3rd party tools... and no complaining from Sprint about "Phone as modem" plan.. for all they care I'm just using a browser on the phone.

Mother f'er I didn't even know I had this ...

I got mine in the last 4 weeks, I already have the multitouch zoom ... it had to shut down and download updates two nights ago.
