01 V70 No Crank Problem

01 Volvo V70 T5 145K, recently went to start car and after turning the key-nothing. no crank, but all electrical worked well, strong horn and headlights. attempted about 20 cranks, used jumper cables to provoke starter and "banged" on starter to no avail.

Came back to car next weekend and it started first time. Not wanting to take chances i replaced the battery (4 years old) and drove the car for two days (about 10 starts) and then on Sunday morning when we're trying to go home-it won't crank again. So..... I replaced the starter with same "no crank". I have tried both keys (one normally used key and 1 valet key)-still no crank

Thus far, I have an intermittent no crank and i have replaced batery, starter, tried both keys.

What I need to know, after searching everywhere on here it seems that my only choices for parts to replace are the immobilizer ring antenna ring and the nuetral safety switch.

Which do you think it is? Any other ideas?

Update, I just replaced the immoblizer ring / antenna ring and still no crank. I've got 12 volts to starter (main 4 gauge wire) but nothing to the solenoid wire.

What next?

A friend in Chicago's 01 S60 recently had intermittent start due to corroded wire contacts to the starter.

Try starting in neutral instead of park? Possibly an ignition switch or PNP issue. The PNP is know to fail in cold weather.

Hello,

I've seen a lot of corroded solenoid terminals on the P2 models at the dealer. Did you actually remove the wire and check voltage at the connector, or did you check it at the terminal on the solenoid while connected? Remove and reconnect the small spade terminal at the starter several times to clean it up a bit. I usually crimped the contacts of the spade a little tighter while removed (with a small pair of needlenose pliers), but that's up to you. Apply a good amount of dielectric grease and connect/reconnect several more times. Put the grease right to it, don't be shy :). If that doesn't fix it you likely have a bad starter relay. Let me know if you need anything else.

Good luck to you,

Good info to have as I have yet to see this issue?

New update, to recap for future seacrhers:

no crank problem:

-replaced battery, starter, immoblizer antenna ring, tried all keys, tried starting in all gears, rowed shifter through gears multiple times, checked connections for tightness and corrosion

After above repairs-12 volts on main starter cable (2/4 gauge) and NO 12 volts on starter relay wire during crank.

So... I wired a another 12 volt source and connected to a contact on aftermarkert starter (aftermarket starter had three blades on relay versus factory 1) while starting and car cranked and then... IT NOW CRANKS NORMALLY!!!

I have started it 30 times since and still works fine so who knows what happened.

To be clear, with all above repairs no resolution to no crank problem. External 12 volt source allowed starter to engage and sice then, (with no other changes/repairs) the car cranks normally.

Maybe, the new starter was bad and needed a "jump"?

I'm still not quite understanding? Do you have a + signal to the small wire running to your starter solenoid on the car(factory wiring harness) while holding the ignition switch in crank position?

After all above repairs.

I removed the factory starter relay wire and with a testlight determined no 12 volt at wire end- I then reconnected the factory wire and checked again on relay spade-no 12 volt.

I then conencted a EXTRA wire from a 12 volt source to an EXTRA starter relay spade on the aftermarket starter and got the car cranked. I then removed the EXTRA wire and now car cranks normally. weird.
