X70 Double Din Install Write-up

people seem interested in this. i just completed my own, so i thought i'd help out. it's not too different than the pinned 850 write up, but i've noticed people get spooked (myself included) when crutchfield says DDs won't fit.

1. buy stereo

2. buy wiring harness

3. solder, crimp, tape

4. take out stock stereo (sry, n00bs, no pictars for that one) and unplug everything.

5. grind down guide rails. i used a leathermans tool. it took some time. others have used a dremel. i bet sandpaper would work eventually. others have also said this step isn't necessary, so use your discretion. i wanted to use the din cage for the head unit, so i chose to get rid of them.

6. purchase a sleeve or use the supplied sleeve. example:

in order to stop it from sliding out, i used some 3M velcro tape on the sleeve and the hole. so far, it's holding. that's a little white trash, but to be honest, i'm white trash.

7. plug in your newly soldered/crimped wires to the harness. plug the harness into the back of the stereo. slide stereo into cage and screw/clamp down.

8. if you have extras (ipod cables, aux cables, hd radio/satellite box) snake them through the interior. i cut a hole in the glove compartment for my hd tuner. my usb and aux cables now sit in my center console for easy access. the center console does not have to come completely out. obviously, you can also put the ipod/aux in the glove compartment.

9. hopefully, it looks like this and works:

i hope this helps. i'm no pro at this; other people on this board are much more knowledgeable. just thought i'd consolidate some of the tips i've gathered over the last month or so in one post.
