Using Valve Body Or Internals From Another Aw50-42le Tranny

Anyone know if other AW50-42LE trannies from other cars (say SAAB) have internal parts that are interchangeable with the AW50-42LE tranny in my 95 850?

For example can I buy a low mileage SAAB AW50-42LE transmission and open up the case and take the internals out and put them in my tranny and reinstall on my 850?

I've never taken a tranny apart before (or even removed it from the car) but I was just wondering if it was possible. Or are the AW50-42LE's on our Volvos, Volvo-specific with Volvo-specific parts?

Most of the parts should be interchangeable as it's not volvo specific. Both Saab and Daewoo used this tranny...

As for bother? not worth it unless you know what you are doing!

Anyway, I'm also in the search for auto trannys on the cheap AKA toasted.

+1

as long as the transmission says AW50-42LE on it, all internals are interchangable. It think the torque convertor housing on a Saab is different, and they all use a different electrical connection to the transmission control computer.

Yeah, the housings are totally different. The valve body cover on the Saab is not a thin piece of metal like the Volvo ones. And the PNP switches on the Saabs look very cheap!

Next time someone rags on Saabs and you wanna join in, just remember they share this tranny. :)
