connorb850
After doing some research, I finally found some good information about putting a S/V70 gauge cluster in an 850. You have to get a new instrument wiring plate if you want to program the mileage of your car into the digital odometer. It can only be programmed once, so you cant re-program a used one to your mileage (but you could try to find a used cluster with mileage close to yours). To program a new wiring plate, you need access to a VST (Volvo System Tester) that plugs into the OBD2 port. This was easy for me because my dad owns an independent Volvo shop and has one. Unlike the 850, all S/V70s have the trip computer installed, but some are not activated. Of course you will need a VIN number specific pin code (expensive) and a trip computer info switch from the dealer to activate. So basically, the pin is like a password to access the trip computer. If you get a new wiring plate you can program any 4-digit number you want and wont need to buy the pin code. I was able to find a new wiring plate (part # 9459558) really cheap ($50) and I also found a used gauge cluster from a wrecked 98 V70 R ($150). I transferred the gauges to the new wiring plate so I could program my own mileage and activate the trip computer. The wiring plugs on the S/V70 cluster are exactly the same as the 850 and it fits in the dash perfectly. Also the black 850 trip info switch works with the S/V70 trip computer. Once it was programmed, everything worked great and it looks awesome. The trim surrounding the gauges is definitely a lighter gray than the black in the 850, but I think it matches with my light gray interior. Here are some pics below of the process: Switching gauges to new wiring plateComparing both instrument clustersClose up in the carDash viewLighting at night

Does the guy with the wrecked R have any more parts he'd like to sell?Actually he said he has basically the whole car except the front end has been wrecked (its saffron with grey interior). His name is John Strandberg and owns Strandberg Auto . I have bought several things from him and I have always had great service.

Serge
Thanks for the comment It definately makes things a lot easier!←Sorry to bug you with so many questions, but I noticed in the first pic you were able to take off the gauge needles and whatnot. How did you accomplish this?
Veneficus
I wonder if you could krylon fusion the faceplate for the S70 cluster so that it better matches the 850s... brett how much are you asking for yours?
connorb850
Sorry to bug you with so many questions, but I noticed in the first pic you were able to take off the gauge needles and whatnot. How did you accomplish this?If you look closely, there are 2 screws for each of the gauges. After the screws are taken out you just carefully pry the whole gauge off the old wiring plate and push it into the new plate. The needles are attached to the gauges so you dont have to mess with them at all. The gauges are connected to the wiring plate with several pins. AnthonyR
Hey, I was just wondering if your speed works with no problems. I put an S70 Cluster in in August and the speed will only work when cold or humid and only for about 10 miles. everything else worked flawlessly. So I am wondering if it's the speed sensor, something wierd from my PNP switch gone bad or the cluster. Also the trip comp in the S70 cluster wasn't activated, and I have OBD1 (1995) so to get that activated I am assuming the cluster needs to be in a car for them to interface with it.
