Sc-901 Install

Been looking to get a good working SC-815 for my 850. I have the SC-816 but want the darker face so it matches the AC panel, looks tacky dark gry and light grey. lol However I am finding it hard to acquire one in decent condition. I don't mind replacing burnt bulbs, but bunk tape decks, cd players, and worn buttons has got me at the breaking point.

On to the topic,

What all is needed to install the SC-901 into my 850 wagon. I was checking Erie and they had one for like $250, but they say that you will need the 440 watt amp to boot for $200. I'm not looking at the dynamic setup as of yet.

So can I install said HU with out the amp?

If not, what is needed to adapt this in? As Erie says it can be modified to a 850.

First off it is direct plug and play as far as the head unit goes. BUT here's the bad news:

You don't need the 4x100 amp. But you do need an EXTERNAL amplifier if you want to use the head unit at all, because the SC-901 does not have an internal amp like your SC-816 does to power the speakers. (Well, that's not entirely true - it has a very small internal amp that drives the center channel speaker only, which you don't have in your car anyways) I have my SC-900 connected to an 850R amp which is 4x40W, it does the trick just fine. I actually might have an extra one kicking around my garage if you're interested...I bought a couple spares off a parts car a while back.

Oh and you can find SC-901s cheaper than that....that's a horrible price.

I think that I already have a amp. When I pulled out the 816 to try various 815's I noticed that there is a plug in the CD changer spot, and that wire is incased with antenna wire in a foam surround. I do not have a changer, unless someone removed it but I have not found any ends to it. I do own the 850R was this amp standard, and was this where it would be hooked up on the back of the HU? Would the 400 watt amp be better or to much for our speakers, as I am sure that the dynamic speakers had better rms handling.

What kind of car do you have? Standard 850s did not have amps from the factory. The stereo harness connects to the amplifier, which then connects to the head unit. Amps were standard only on 850R + T5Rs, 98-00 R cars and C70s; Some S and V70s had one mounted under the passenger seat but usually not. The 4x100W amp, while nice, will require extensive re-wiring to work in any non-C70 application. The 850R amp is nice because it mounts right in the center console and there are no wires to run.

A plug in the cd changer slot probably means wiring is there, but the changer was removed by a previous owner.

Also plan on running a basslink and saw that QBM had the pin connector that went into the changer slot to covert to RCA for external amp hookup. I know they are gone, but does anyone else make that connector?

In that case, your amp will be right in front of the heater core.

So all I need is the 900 or 901 HU and I'm golden?

One slight problem with what you said. The amp for the center channel is NOT inside the -901. Rather, it is in the dolby processor.

Still hhaven't nosed around under the dash. However packages came today and while I was installing the v70 upper tails I found on the passenger side a antenea wire with a cut end just hangin' out back there. Gotta figure out what thats to. Talked to Aaron and he said it might be that the car was pre wired for a CD changer. Any thoughts.
