Awd "chirping" Noise In Low Speed Turns

Hello all,

I hate to ask this here, being a former Master tech and all. I know there are a few other techs on the forums though, so here goes. My 2000 S70 AWD has a terrible chirping noise when turning at low speeds (such as into a parking stall). Also occurs if I snap the throttle lightly at low speeds. Sounds like a metel-to-metal chirp (similar to the front axle splines shifting on the P2 cars when shifted into gear). There was a Tech-Net Note on this (recommended flushing the transaxle with the Volvo (3309 spec) fluid). Needless to say, I am running the Volvo fluid and it's still as bad as ever. What have you guys done to successfully eliminate this? If it matters, the angle gear, coupling sleeve, and prop shaft are all new as of the past year. Being the bulletin suggested flushing the trans, I assume the noise is originating from there though. Any ideas? Now that it's getting warm out and I have the windows down this is driving me nuts. Please advise...

Thanks,

Joe

You don't mention rain, but there is a phenomenon called "rain squeal" that sounds like the same noise. Maybe you have a driveshaft/exhaust rub.

Hello,

Thanks for the insight. That is usually only a problem with P2 cars though. Not to mention, mine is a single chirp, not an extended squeal. Anyone familiar with splines shifting knows the sound I am referring to. My 760 Turbo used to make a similar noise when taking off from a stop. Just a small amount of play in the rear pinion flange I imagine caused that...

Thanks anyway,

Joe
