Maf Difference -98 Vs 99/00?

I've searched on this topic but was not able to find an answer so I decided to post my question.

My MPG on hwy is really bad, ~21, and I believe the MAF is at fault. I'm looking to get a BOSCH MAF for my -98 T5, and I found one one ebay for $88 (new). However the ad is listing it for 99/00 models only. Is the MAF for a -98 different? If so, is that due to the ETM?

Thanks

did you try cleaning yours with CRC MAF cleaner? Like $5 and worth a try...my 98 has done 280,000 on original MAF so far. Others are not so lucky but unless it is confirmed dead, its worth a try...

I thought the plugs were totally different.

Here's a suggestion. If you can get your hands on an OBD code reader that has live data (ought to be available for under $100), plug that sucker into the OBD connector and monitor the MAF volume being measured. If it indeed is reading very low (say .500 lb/min), watch the stability of the reading as the a/c clicks on and the fan clicks on. It will vary a little but will steady itself fairly well during each of these situations. If it is swinging rather wildly and has a hard time remaining steady, there is very likely a small vacuum leak that is bypassing the MAF. Normal reading at idle will be like .7 lb/min to .85 lb/min depending upon the drain from the accessories.

Any small vacuum leak after the MAF will set the O2 sensor into a tailspin and will constantly enrich the mix. Mileage will suffer. Likely suspects, the PTC nipple hose that runs from the intake manifold to intake hose, also, check the PCV hose itself.

In my experience, these MAF's are in fact pretty tough.

Thanks for the replies.

The reason I suspect the MAF is that I actually changed it about a year ago. I was having a CEL light and switching the MAF made it go away. I decided to keep it on so that I wouldn't have a problem getting through the inspection here in TX. I was hardly driving the car so the bad MPG didn't really matter.

I just had the car pass the inspection and I'm doing a lot more of driving now, hence I'd like to get my MPG to come down.

Btw, the MAF I put on a year ago was from a V70 R, can that be part of the problem? Not sure how compatible they are with the T5 engine.

I really can't help you with the MAF.

However, a few months back I had really poor highway mileage too, and it turned out to be the tires and alignment. I bought new tires and got the car aligned, and my mpg jumped from ~20-21 mpg, to almost 30. I juts thought I would let you know. Good luck.

Well my tires only have a few thousand miles on them and I had the car aligned a couple of weeks ago so unfortunately it's not that simple in my case. Thanks anyways..
