Dual Mass To Single Mass Flywheel

Recommended Posts

If you go from dual mass flywheel to single mass flywheel, what parts would be required and what would be a good alternative to the "R" clutch ?

Any help of part numbers and what is needed would be great.

I assume I need a 707 pressureplate from Audi and either "R" clutch or something to hold around 400 hp . . . . and would that be all ? ? ?

Depends on thickness of the friction plates primarily I think. If the single mass and dual mass use the same clutch discs, then yeah you can probably just change flywheel and PP.

Here's the exact dual mass clutch setup on Matt's car:

Here's the 707 plate and clutch I have for my single mass:

Both items from Southbend.

ah, very nice Josh

did you get the stage 4 clutch also ? what was that rated at ? and what was the process of getting your set-up ?

Not sure what "stage" I got. Just called Andy at Southbend and told him I wanted a Sachs 707 plate with a 6 puck "feramic" clutch. I had to repin my flywheel for the pressure plate which wasn't a big deal.

Throwout bearing/clutch slave cylinder setups are different (in their OEM setup). The single mass cars ran an external slave cylinder that pushed a lever arm onto the throwout bearing. Dual mass cars ran an internal slave cylinder/throwout bearing assembly.

That said, I'm not sure if it matters if you run an external slave cylinder with a dual mass flywheel, or an internal slave cylinder with a single mass flywheel, all I know is that it changed over with the flywheels.

You can haz a single mass flywheel but you need to use a single mass design clutch.

R clutch, SPEC or South bend.

The dual mass pressure plate is different, I have a 99 tranny that was designed to run with a dual mass but I use the internal slave design, SPEC stage 3+ clutch for the T5R as listed on thier website and a single mass flywheel.

Just make sure your flywheel has squares (new design flywheel) not holes (old style), I have the old style and misfires galore. Need to replace my flywheel to the new one.

Have you tried swapping crank sensors to the other style (longer vs. shorter)?
