madfinnhockey
Stats, 98 S70 GLT with 265K, a daily driver, driven 80 - 100 miles dailyOver the past year or so I've had to add a very small amount of coolant to the tank every month or two. I had a pressure test performed once and it came back ok.My son had the car for a few months and said that it build up to having to add coolant every other week. When he returned it the CE light was on (temp sensor fault) and I noticed that the temp gauge never went up very far. He said it never overheated. I replaced the thermostat and temp sensor, CE light never came back on and the temp gauge operates normally.I'm driving the car now and the expansion tank empties nearly weekly. The car runs fine, no problems at all, no mis firing, no smoke, no codes. I don't see any oil film in the coolant in the expansion tank, and I just changed the oil and it appeared fine, just looked like dirty oil. Looking at the dipsitck sometimes I see some crud up at the top of the stick, but the oil itself is not milky or mis-colored. I do sometimes smell coolant when I open the hood after driving but I don't see any leaks. I don't smell any coolant from inside the car and the carpet in front of the seats and under the dash is dry. When the engine is cold and I add coolant, when I remove the expansion tank cover it still appears to be under a slight amount of pressure, it hisses just a second till the cap is off, is that normal?Any ideas????Thanks
PsychoWagon
if it's emptying every week, pressure testing it would show something. If you think it's a slight head gasket leak, have someone rev it up to 5k and someone else standing outside to look at the resevoir. If it starts bubbling = headgasket. AlvinL
Also, lift up the coolant reservoir bottle and look for thermal stress cracks and leaking signs.
Auburn T5
my car is doing the EXACT same thing. changed the tstat and now it emptys the tank after about a week of driving. Found coolant drips from the bottom edge of the passenger side on the radiator.

Leaks from the passenger side are probably seam cracks, seams and under pressure while driving, leaks out.I would try that first before you start thinking head gasket.
