swedishiron
I called IPD about this a while back; they said it was safe to bolt on an 18T without a new Tune.
Mesoam
like Pras said, you will be fine as long as you keep the boost down....these turbo's are small enough to not worry like some of you do....the people who pretzel their bottom ends have always been screwing around.... (high boost, low RPM)
shanehutton
Just to further confuse the issue how about doing it with a 16T tune such as the ST stage 2? Is it safe for the full boost of that tune (15 - 17psi)?Or would you need a true 18T tune to be safe?
lookforjoe
I ran a 19T with IPD's T5M 15psi tune (intended for the 16T that would have come with that car) - at much higher boost levels than stock - BUT I had h-beam rods in my motor by then.I also ran a 16T on my lpt motor with the same tune @ much higher than stock (for that motor) boost levels, without problems. The point being, at any tune level, it is possible to push the envelope somewhat without getting codes or damaging the engine.I believe that as others have said, as long as you don't turn the wick up, the car should be fine - you can always loosen the wastegate actuator to delay onset if you want to err on the side of caution. You won't get codes simply because of bolting the turbo on, the issue would arise from the higher cfm's the 18T can deliver than the 16T at the same load points. You could get a TCV code if the actuator isn't set to the stock psi, vs the 18T preset, which I would expect to be higher.

Was the S70R thought to have internal engine modifications like stronger rods, or were they limited to the 18T, injectors and ECU?
