Miscellaneous Turbo & Manifold Q's

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Recently acquired a 15G from a '95 T5-R. Said to have 105k or so, shaft is tight. I was considering a rebuild any way, since it is off and all. Are there any other reliable checks? Shaft could be tight and still leak excessive oil into intake, right? (I know some oil in the intake is considered normal on turbo cars) If I do rebuild, where do you guy's recommend for a good kit? Priced locally @ over $200 (seems insane). Are the ebay kits any good?

Also, I am considering an R or "Japan" manifold. Wasn't going to remove it though, just going to swap the cartridge and compressor housing (afradi of breaking manifold studs in the head). Is this common, or a thing of the past with the red blocks? I searched on the R manifold and read 27+ pages of results. None concluded if it (or the Japan nami) would be worth the money on a stock LPT tune. Thoughts?

Last question, what is the general concensus for wastegate settings on a stock LPT? I have it @ 3 psi right now (Volvo says 1.8). Go to 4, or stay @ 3 with the new turbo)?

Thanks for any help, and sorry for so many "dumb" questions,

Joe

Honestly man, if there's very little shaft play I'd slap it in and enjoy it.

As far as the R manifold I'll be adding one shortly and will shoot you a little review at that time.....

I have my wastegate set to ~4 psi w/ the 16T and 12 psi tune. You'll be fine at 3 or 4 IMO.

Aaron,

As always, thanks for the insight. Did you have it @ 4 psi even on the stock tune? I know ME7 is more finicky than M4.4 about this stuff (hence why you can't reliably run a MBC with ME7). I did have mine @ 4 for a while last summer, seemed fine. Just fishing for info on what others are running. I'm afraid if I get it too high the ETS will just back off the throttle opening and cancel out the effect. For example, I raised it all the way to 5 at one point. It I snapped the throttle in 2nd gear, it'd go instantly 6-7 psi, then shoot right back to zero. Almost as if the ECM didn't wannt boost yet, so it cut the throttle back until it was ready for it. Love my AWD, just wish it was more mod-friendly :).

No problem.....I actually had it at stock setting until I first got the tune and wasn't reaching the specified amount. I then hand tweeked it a few times which in turn kept making the car overboost. Finally, after getting some feedback from experienced members I set it to 4 psi and have yet to have a problem.
