My Engine Build Thread

Recommended Posts

Id also like to know how much that is running you, but if your having the manifold port matched it seems a bit silly not to spend 250 bucks and pick up an r mani here on the forum...I wouldn't want to spend the money but everything your putting into the motor it would be a shame to be missing that one part, and the overall design of the R mani compared to the t5 is just better, not just the port sizes... but since I haven't said it yet, awsome build, good info for me and its nice to have another current build on the forum!

There is a thread that shows the STD mani beside a later ME7 mani and the ME7 is much bigger ports.

This means you get a benefit at much less cost. I have just done that install in view of many more upgrades.

i.e-ecu/turbo/exhaust etc , on my '96 850R wagon. Had to re-build motor due to water ingestion and the

resulting bent rod.....Awaiting its return from my garage/re-builder as he is giving it a good "run in" to

ensure a good end result !

I too am watching this thread with great interest ! This is a great forum for ideas and answers , good

luck on this build !

Cheers LesM.

 no one , shoot they can barley get there base tune down right let alone anthing off that copy

I tried twice to retune my my car when i put in the new 18T! The tunes where CRAP!!!!!!!!! Boglin who also lives in Hamilton also tried twice to retune and is now stuck with the RICA 16T tune, as am i? Another guy we know has a modded S60R and put has been test fitting a new DP for the R and after the install, he brought his car to the dyno and it ran "so lean" the tuner shut it down right a way! He then had Rica retune the car and the tune is crap again! I am FKN pissed that i bought Rica, which i bought from George from Viva, who told me he had retunes NO PROBLEM... there has been times it took months for a reply! Viva is a joke!!!

I know its just hard for me to bite for an r manifold as I'm spending msot of the money at the machine shop. I'm going over there to discuss the port and polishing tomorrow. When I know how much it will cost I will let you all know. 250 usd is 400 cad, which is not worth the hp gain... we'll see though, ill contact local scrapyards

I just got an R Mani from Cookstown auto wreckers for $15Ocdn, plus $25 shipped!

Update: Should be getting the con rods tomorrow. Latest Wednesday (overnight shipping used on Friday). Didn't have time at work to drop by the machine shop to see how things are going, but will do that tomorrow and update on their progress.

Final decisions have been made, I'm going to scrap the Garrett turbos due to their unpopularity for breaking/need rebuilt as often as they do.

So:

Siemens 630cc injectors

Turbo-Tuner -Will purchase once engine is near completion

T3/T4 Hybrid... should last longer than the garrett.

R-Manifold - Trying to source a used in Canada, if not I'll get new

5 speed swap - Any canadians in Ontario selling?

Machine shop is boring out the walls for OS1, they are waiting for the exhaust manifold to port match with the head, same goes for intake. I'll get a seperate price to do all this for all you people interested. Machine shop is ordering me some Mahle pistons, when those come in, I'm assembling the short block then sending it back out to get balanced... When it's balanced the manifolds go there so they can port/polish (doing it seperately so you can all know the cost roughly). I'm expecting all this to take 3-4 weeks, and hopefully do my engine swap in my air conditioned shop in the summer ;)

Crankshaft, getting sent out to get checked for out of roundess of journals and cleaned:

Next pics will be of everything cleaned and ready to assemble (including the floor!)

edit: Too many pics to post on here, didn't want ops to get mad as they're in higher quality. Just click and its all the same

Did you try Cookstown for the R Mani??

Who is doing the machine work?

im surprised no-one threw the tubular manifold idea out there, your going big as am i, im in the process of tearing the motor out of my 98 s70. doing almost the exact same thing, new top end, trans, manifolds on both ends, and a big turbo. im stuck on the garrett though, all my audi buddies run 30R's and love em. i think the cast manifolds are still to restrictive i going to have a buddy of mine try to make a tubular one, if not i think tig-art sold them and maybe still does.

I don't feel like toying with a tubular manifold. I'll source an R manifold from a scrapyard by the time I need it. I just ordered OS2 pistons from volvo, and the rings (Backordered from Sweden dammit!)

So I'll see them in 1-2 weeks, my rods should be in tomorrow. After that a week at the machine shop getting everything matched up and I'll be slapping it all back together. Then a balance, then the port and polish :D

Anyone have a bad experience with r-sport international?

I ordered Friday night, e-mailed Monday for tracking number and eta... haven't heard back, and now its Thursday.

Come Friday I'm filing complaint with Paypal and going to order somewhere else. $780 CAD ordered and they should have atleast had the courtesy to email back?
