True Swede
My 98 T5 (130k) has been having a leak for a while and when I had the oil changed I was told it was most likely a rear main seal leak. It looked like it came from the rear of the engine on the driver side close to the tranny. I had the oil changed and now it seems like the leak has stopped. I check the dip stick every now and then and it appears to hold the oil. Before there would be oil on the ground after only a minute after parking, now nothing no matter how long parked.Anyone ever heard of this? NoodleKnight
My car showed the same symptoms, leaking a bit after an oil change and it looked like the leak was coming from the back of the engine. I never quite figured out what was the cause of the leak but I did figure out that it was caused by overfilling of oil. Only happened once when I took my car in for a 120k mile service and the shop overfilled the engine, after it leaked out a good bit of oil the leak never appeared again.Hopefully this helps. True Swede
Mine was actually leaking BEFORE the oil change. It was virtually dry when I took it in, I had hardly driven the car for the last six months and stupidly never checked the oil. It's now after the oil change that the leak has stopped, so no overfill in my case.
magicaljake
did you use any type of high millage oil when you changed it?

True Swede
did you use any type of high millage oil when you changed it?First of all, what would high mileage oil look like? Sludgy? Secondly I did not change the oil myself.Thirdly, if there was high mileage oil, what difference would that make on the leak?
the commissar!
What they are getting at is some of the HM oils claim to have additaves that help condition seals and do other magical stuff...If you had a relatively small leak at one of the 6 seals on the engine the HM oil may help slow or even stop that. If you took it to a quick lube place and got the basic oil change you probably have regular oil. They may have tried to sell you up to HM.
HtownTurboBrick
if you took it to an oil change place then more then likely what they did was put some cheapo oil in it with a lot of crap in it that blocked up the gaps. basically the really crappy oils have deposits and what not in them and will clot over leaks. HM oil has additives and what not, but I've never seen them have anything enough to seal up a leaky RMS.
True Swede
I had Castrol GTX SAE5W-30 put in. Could the leak possibly come back now with the approaching Dallas summer heat, considering the oil probably thinning out somewhat?

However with the car not leaking i suggest you keep using whatever is keeping the leak stopped up until you can fix the RMS. Switching to a full synth will only show you all your leaks again.
