Buying A New Head Unit...

FZE

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into buying a new head unit for my 1995 850 Wagon, and am probably going to buy from Best Buy. Their online "vehicle compatibility check" system says that all but a pair of Alpines, a $550 Pioneer, and a Sony cassette deck won't fit the car. I'm not sure I believe that. How accurate is this checking utility, if anyone's familiar with it? The head unit I'll probably be buying is this one if it will fit.

I can't see why they would be incompatible... As long as the fit in a standard DIN slot and use 12v (i'm not sure of any decks that don't) they'll fit

Speaking of DIN slots, is Best buy likely to charge extra for the Dash Pocket mounting bracket that Crutchfield includes?

(No edit feature?)

Also, the USB input on the Pioneer unit I linked to - is that just good for hooking up an iPod via USB, or would it be possible to plug in some sort of storage device (say a flash drive full of MP3s) to it and play music from that?

u should look at pioneer electronic's own website for pdf manuals. on page 16, it seems to indicate both ipod and any usb memory device can be used in the usb slot. page 48 has more info.

and any single din should fit, u just need an extra box to fill the other half of the hole. double din, u need to either modify the chassis of the head unit or trim the side plastic rails in the opening of the car. many of the retailers will exclude head units (and other audio equipment) because it will require extra parts and/or modifications, and they don't want to deal with that, crutchfield included.

Are you saying that unit won't fit in my car without modification because the factory unit is 2 DIN slots tall?

Does anyone sell just like a plain DIN sleeve with a flat front to go on top/bottom of a single DIN head unit to cover the hole?

Lulz

every single single din headunit will fit in your car

every single dual din headunit will fit in your car

but with the dual din you will have to cut the side things that the single dins sit on so its a oonce and done deal.

I'm now debating between the Pioneer unit and a JVC. I don't really have any experience with either brand, and though my first instinct would be to go with the Pioneer, the JVC has pretty glowing ratings, especially compared to the Pioneer, which purportedly has a really obtuse interface.

What would you recommend?

JVC -mainly due to the USB plug being right in the front of the headunit

The Pioneer has front-mounted USB as well, it's just covered (as is the JVC, but it's a little less noticeable on the Pioneer)

Walk away from Best Buy, they don't know about Volvo's. Go to a local shop, you'll get better informed staff and better service. A bit of research will go a long way to future audio happiness.
