Build Thread

I picked up this car about a year ago and progress has been very slow. I got it for $600 and it needs a lot of work, especially in the body department. I already replaced the steering rack and I have rebuilt a head that is going to go in, due to 2 cylinders currently with bad valves. My rough plans are a 19t, m56h, and get the body cleaned up hopefully by the end of the summer/fall.

When I first got it, wasn't drivable even though the guy I bought it from said it was.....

BTW AAA doesn't tow unregistered vehicles FTL

This is the head that will be going in. Replacing the valve stem seals was a real PITA with the not so good valve spring compressor I have. I cleaned up the valves and checked for sealing. I also did a little match porting on the exhaust side.

I did a CXRacing fmic last fall before I shipped out. When I got back at the end of the winter I lamin-x'ed the projectors but ended up not liking them.

Last Friday I got my trim rings in the mail and had to install them.....

It's a very nice cosmetic upgrade from stock.

Sat I finally got the koni's DIY coilover's in that I made last fall as well as the ipd rear springs. I still have to get the rear koni shocks in though. The ride height is pretty good but I would like to roll the fenders, I can still have two inches more of drop.

Sunday I took the 15g off to change out the straight exhaust housing for an angled one so I could put the OBX exhaust in. I was suprised to find that the turbo was in really good condition as far as play and the condition of the blades.

Straight flange

This was a job from hell without a lift, I ran out of time though to get anything but the downpipe on so I'll have to finish that next Friday. Here's a clip if anyone was interested what an open downpipe sounds like open downpipe. BTW I fixed a vacuum leak right after I took the vid so it is much smoother now and doesn't sound like it's going to stall. I found it funny that with the open downpipe it returns to idle much slower, probably because there is no back pressure, I guess.

Nice work so far - I'd have rebuilt that turbo while it was out, though - even if there's not much shaft play the oil rings can fail - how many miles on it?

Yea I am gonna ride it out until I can afford a 19t. I would assume it's the original turbo so roughly 170k.

oh my god. open dp sounds awesome.

lol can you imagine just sitting @ a red light w/ that idling?

No one would ever challenge you again (cept for a car that is supposed to sound like that lol...grr vette's )

not that that is is tottaly related- but what is a safe pressure to run w/ a stock engine? I get a fuel cut past 15psi- but if i could get a tune to allow for more would the engine handle it?

I am not sure at what point the turbo produces hot air- i still havent figured out what type of turbo mine is a 13 or a 15- it seems as if the plate where the info is gone...

I have seen my pressure go up to 17 and 18 before -is it possible that a previous owner upgraded the turbo and not the ecu?

Sorry 4 the questions in your thread -just seem like someone who knows whats up :)

Did you see any gain with the FMIC?
