jdlc
Just replaced my T5M heater core - not hat hard but would not want to do it again (& it cost me about $150 in parts). So I'm thinking, if I remove the heater core in the cooling loop in our V70, then I may extend it's life, as well as the htr hoses. There is so much room in the rear of the engine area of NA that by removing the block-end of the htr hoses, I can 'jump' the inlet and outlet using 5/8 heater hoses available in parts store. What do you think guys, worth the trouble? I'll take pix if and when I've done this.

If you take it out of the loop, I believe it will crap out prematurely.

Sounds like against common logic - if no heat and no pressure applied for half the time, I'm thinking it should last twice the time it would otherwise last. What do you think would be the reason for your belief?Indeed, our V70 is 11+ years now, never failed to flush the coolant every two years to avoid making the coolant acidic and eat away on cooling 'channels' and hoses. Hoosier Daddy
the coolant helps protect the metal of radiator/heater core from oxidation.

BEJinFBK
If it's cold enough out that you need to reconnect it,do you really wanna be out there hooking it back up?"Yo, Babe...Sorry it's so cold in here. Just a sec." Ha! It's really not that big a deal. Sounds like a waste of time...Besides, messing with antifreeze when it's cold out sucks ! Ask me how I know.

Yeah, but you're in Alaska .A little time will be spent, for sure(twice a year, no less), but so does changing the core - I spent about an hour and a half doing that, I believe. You and Taskmule from Canada didn't get it, Northern exposure? .Heater core replaced: T5MOrig htr core for 11 years and want to extend the life of: V70Like in my sig, I have two of them. swedishiron
I wonder if running propylene glycol is a better bet for extending the life over ethylene glycol ???
PsychoWagon
sorry jdlc, are you retarded? You think by removing the heater core you're prolonging the life of your what? Rad? Water pump? coolant hoses?K some sad news for you: Coolant hoses should be replaced approx 8 years 120 000 miles. If you haven't done a rad yet, get prepared to do one. If you haven't done your waterpump, you should be doing one. And if your heater core is working, then let it work for another 50k. After me saying all of this, what are you trying to prolong in your V70? Or just avoid spending some money on repairs? Coolant passing through the heater core won't impact your coolant negatigively at all. Aslong as you do your flushes, your head or engine shouldnt get plugged coolant passages. Proper mixture is key. you wanting to remove the heater core to prolong life is like saying this:I'm going to shut down 2 / 5 cylinders to prolong the life of those 2 cylinders.orI'm taking out all the interior and going to sit on buckets to preserve the upholstry of my car
PsychoWagon
edit: Plus by taking it out of the loop, you're just going to cause it to oxidize, so if you ever do hook it back up you're going to get ltos of contaminants in your coolant and a stuff load of coolant on your floor... but if youre taking out the upholstry to preserve it, then that later part shouldnt matter. jdlc
Thanks for the input guys. I'll take pix if I decide to try this. What have I got to lose if I try this at least once, lol.You don't regret things you did, only things you didn't.

You got to take it easy with the pipe, eh. Then maybe you'll come up with a better analogy. It's all in your mind, it's not making you any smarter . Case in point:"Coolant passing through the heater core won't impact your coolant negatigively at all. Aslong as you do your flushes, your head or engine shouldnt get plugged coolant passages"Wha , what dude, say that again (scratch head). How do you say it in Canadian? Fail, eh or eh, fail.
