Being in college now, I paid for a $2200 HP and use it as a desktop now. Get a small laptop for class, and a Asus EEE 900A from ebay (about $10 for a refurb which is like new) and then get a Maxtor Network attached storage if you want to be able to access files from anywhere. Also on a side not Windows 7 runs like a dream on both my Asus EEE and my HP. HP builds very solid computers, as does asus. Also khax, what are you majoring in? Any sort of engineering and you will want a windows PC.

If you're parents are paying, go to your college's bookstore and get the best laptop they have. I was in the same situation upon entering college, and I am still using the same laptop since freshman year 3 years ago. My roommate is our Apple campus rep, and the 'discount' is really not that great. Plus, Microsoft Office is bundled and sold CHEAP for students, and you can get decent antivirus (I use CA) for the year for ~60.

Buy the PC through the school, and provided it is a decent school, they will have a tech desk that will fix your PC free of charge.

And why pay more for an Apple when it only has one mouse button!? :P

If your parents work hard enough and can afford to buy you shit, then by all means let them do it. Just don't be an ungrateful bastard and make sure they know you appreciate it. Do well in school and that justifies them helping you out. If you've been using a PC all your life, then getting one for college will certainly make the transition into college easier as well.

slower? lol... know anything about a PC's HAL?

i don't mean in general, i mean for the cost. an $800 mac book can't perform as fast as an $800 PC laptop could from a good brand. not that it makes much of a difference for the types of applications i use.

I have always used PCs, but most of the PC laptops out there are a bit crappy. My Sony VAIO is not too bad, even though it's the lower end one they have, it's still a well built machine. The new Dell I got my mom is really nicely built.

But honestly, if I was getting a brand new laptop, it would be a Macbook (or Pro). I'd either dual-boot XP or just use Parallels.

that's the thing....now, to compete with the build quality of Apple, PC companies are rolling out amazing stuff....magnesium alloy casing is almost a given now (Sony has been using it for years, but Dell, Samsung, and Asus are following). Like I said, I just bought a new Dell Latitude, and it comes just as well built as any Apple, with better features for the price, and not to mention a 3 year warranty! The warranty is so money when it comes to laptops these days with all the traveling and partying going on, not to mention all the downloading of god knows what kind of files that can totally corrupt anything, including your mind.

Look at the new Samsung X360-34p, and tell me the build quality and specs isn't on par with the Mac Air, and look at the Dell Adamo or Latitudes, and you'll be impressed, and throw your Macbooks aside!

Everything will be "outdated" in 6 months but not unusable. If you need to save money, but a laptop thats about 6 months old as that is the usual price drop off point. ANY NEW LAPTOP IS WORTHLESS IF ITS UNDER $600 - you will get vista and it will run like stuff.... (I work in a computer shop and see this everyday) Sure the "mini" laptops are cool but you will get tired of the small screen and alot of them dont have optical drives.

Base your laptop purchase on what graphics card is in the laptop!!!! I cannot press that issue any harder, the graphics card is the only thing you really cant upgrade -provided yes, most cpu's are not upgradable either, but any dual core will hold you for awhile(2.0ghz and higher) If you have the money get an Alienware - I know some people will say it say rip off, but they have never owned one.OR get a Dell XPS, in the end no matter what you get get a laptop which was built for gamers, it will cost more but its built for the heat of gaming- which means it will last longer if used properly.

Mac vs PC, Mac WILL COST YOU MORE- whoever said they cost the same is wrong. Macs are great I have a macbook pro(but two desktop pc's). Its fun for messing around with but did cost alot.

IF YOUR NOT IN A HURRY TO GET A LAPTOP WAIT FOR WINDOWS 7 TO BE RELASED. I am running the RC of it on an older HP and its flawless......

just my .2

RC IS Flawless, couldn't agree more. I installed it the day Microsoft released the RC and haven't had to shutdown since. Also most of the once MAC-only features are now in windows (slideshow wallpaper etc).
