New Electrical Gremlin - Ideas?

'95 855T with 125k: I haven't started to diagnose yet, but last night pulling into my garage, I flicked on the high beams with the flasher stalk, just to see into the garage bay for a few seconds as I entered. Both high beams flickered for a second and died, together, and now I have no high beams using either the regular high beam switch or the beam flasher. However, the high beam warning bulb on dash does light as it should if I try to light the high beams. No effect at all on the rest of the external lights which work fine. My initial thought is a relay, but I only see a single master relay for all of the headlight functions, so it is not so clear that relay has failed with the low beams running fine. Each high beam does have a separate fuse, so also unlikely to be a blown fuse. Any past experience or sugggestions as I start to check this out?

New info: I still haven't done any diagnosing, but this morning, the low beams also died (both toghether). Now, no high or low beans, but the blue high beam dash light lights up when I turn on high beam switch. Since low beams cut out, I also have a bulb out warning on dash when light switch is on. Possibley related issue is that I got both the TRACS and ABS lighs on yesterday morning, not last night, but on again this morning - lights on steady, no blinking of PNP related symptoms. Any new thoughts suggested by this?

I think that's something related with wirings. My advice is... take the car to some good electrician.

Or....check yourself all wirings related with lights(high beams, low beams, flasher).Till that happens... disconnect negative battery cable, just to be safe.

I wish i could help more.

Not a common problem I have seen. I can say the ABS lamp is not related nor is the PNP (wherever that came from?)

Possible relay as suggested?

I'm inclined to agree.

Does the 850 have the major "accessories" relay like the 70's?

I haven't had a chance to look over the diagrams for that item.

I wonder if all of those systems run through it. Makes sense.

Sure would be nice. That'd make it an uber easy fix! :)

EDIT:

Here's a link to your wiring diagrams:

http://pliki.mojevolvo.pl/volvotechinfo/tp...ection_3_39.pdf

You'll find the Hi/Low beams on page 74 of 198. It looks like 31/51 is your Hi/Low beam relay.

I'm thinkin' that it or the stalk switch (3/3) may be the problem.

Quick update, then starting a new thread. All 4 headlights are blown, and they blew in pairs within a few hours of each other. All fuses and relays are good. Final diagnosis seems to be that the alternator is overcharging (17 volts at light plugs) and burning them out. So far nothing else seems to be damaged, but car is parked until fixed, just in case. Thanks for the suggestions.
