Cel Cod P0410

Recommended Posts

I've been running CEL free for over a year now :) , but the other day the SOB came back on. I stopped by Auto Zone to have it read and got the P0410 code, secondary air injection system.

It lists the following possible causes:

-air duct system fault

-open or short connection condition

-poor electrical connection

-secondary air pump faulty

The thing I have done recently that I believe can have caused this is taking out the air filter to check to see if it needed to be changed. I cleaned out the air box and put the filter back in. This was around four days before I got the CEL.

On top of that I left the lights on over one night and had to start the cars with jumpers. This was the same day the CEL came on.

Any suggestions on where to start?

If the light was reset and comes back on I'd be inclined to think it is the air pump. Is the pump making any wierd noises when you first start the car? i.e. a whinning noise or sounds like a jet taking off? It would only last for 5 - 10 seconds. Do a search on SAS pump and you'll get a ton of info from here on how to diagnose and change it out. check that the hose that goes to the SAS Pump from the airbox is not clogged first. Maybe some stuff got in there when you opened up the box the other day.

Good Luck,

Marty

I have had a noise for a couple of months on start up, usually when it's cold/cool outside. It seems to come from the pax side around t-belt/alternator though. It lasts up to 3-4 minutes when it does appear.

Thanks

The sound might just be resonating over to there. My guess based on what you just described is a bad SAS pump. It's most likely coincidental that it happened a few days after you checked the filter. How many miles on the car? these typically start to go somewhere around 100K give or take 20K or so.

Theres a valve that gets stuck open after a while and allows water(condensation) into the pump where it collects and eventually freezes up the motor in the pump.

Car has 130k on it so could be very possible. I'm having someone coming over tomorrow to look at something else so I'll have him check it out.

With 130 it's highly likely. I would plan to p/u a used, known working, pump, and a new valve (~$90 @FCP, if I remember correctly), and some rubber elbows for the vacuum lines. It's not a difficult repair but a slightly annoying one that takes some time b/c the pump is buried under the battery tray.

Good Luck,

Marty

Thanks marty, the FCP suggestion is highly appreciated. A new pump at $400-500 after six months unemployment was not a very tempting idea.

does it sound like this because thats what my pump sounded like when it was on the way out. But i never had a cel i just didn't like the annoying sound so i pulled the relay just thought i would throw this in there. Good luck with the fix..

Yep, that's what mine sounded like. Not quite as loud though that might be due to the recording. I don't know if pulling the relay will get rid of the CEL (if true swede has one from this) but that is always an option. At least for getting rid of the noise ;)

It's not nearly as loud as in the video, plus on mine it can last several minutes until the engine heats up.

Did yours sound like this on every start up, or just under certain conditions?

mine is not far off of it i hated it. No it don't get rid of the cel just the noise lol but thats good enough for me right now.
