01 And 02 P2 Trany Issues

car tends to take 1-2 sec to shift into Drive after going in Reverse. I've thought nothing of it, figured was typical for all Volvos and wasn't an issue. I've done fluid flush (using ipd kit & mobil 3309) in the last 5k, fluid level good and still proper color (pinkish/red). I was crusing matthew's when I read the following: Transmission slow to shift

I want to see who else is having this issue, who has fixed it, and what you did.

Seems the consensus per matthew's is new valve body solenoid, which many of them claim as a common failure point (as common as the ETM issues) of these year Volvo's tranny's

ahh the infamous garage shift. The latest TCM software has been installed? TCM DTC's stored?

I have fixed a few with new valve bodies. Some needed transmissons. I have been told there a few passages in the valve body that aren't quite large enough and get clogged with debris causing them to fail

How can I prevent this? I've gotten the TCM update. My transmission shifts much smoother now and I am planning on getting a new front tranny mount soon. How ever when i was at BVV the tech said it wasnt worth the risk to change the fluid cause I don't believe it ever has been changed.

There's some variable there. If the fluid has never been changed then the transmission may be depending on the buildup of particles in the fluid for friction, and changing it out would cause failure of the tranny. Then again, if it has been changed, and I would say if it has been changed even just once, it would be worth changing it again before you get the buildup.

Either way you're sort of sitting on a transmission that is going to eventually fail. The difference is you can wait until the buildup causes failure which could be one mile or thousands of miles from now, or you can bite the bullet change the fluid and possibly have to replace the tranny. Your call

As far as the valve body stuff is concerned:

I have read the same you say ihatespeedbumps about the size of lines just causing blockage but in your experience you say valve body replacement has solved the issue, or just restarted it for another 50k miles?

If you change the fluid and the tranny dies, it was probably going to die anyways. What is the condition of the fluid?

Well it fixed a few and to my knowledge they are still on the road. Some of the others needed a transmission even with the new valve body, it's a toss up.

garage shift problems can usually be performed by a full adaptation of the TCM at a dealership. It's a test drive cycle where it re-teaches the TCM when to shift etc... Mind you if your fluid is junk, low, it won't do anything, and if you're oil pump is failing it won't do anything.

Get a full adaptation done with a full trans. flush.
