1996 850R Aftermarket Headunit/Amp Removal

Bah

Recommended Posts

Hey there.

First off, i own a 1996 850R and an 1993 850 GLT.

93 850 ive owned for 4-5 + years.

96 only about 2 months =p

So of course, one of my first projects, speakers and headunit. Went out and get a Pioneer DEH-6000bt i think is right? its the newer blue OLED screen from what i put in the 93 lol. And it was only 150 bucks vs the 250 i paid from crutchfield back in 2006.

So, here i am, moving speakers over. This is what i run (or have ran and will continue to run in these cars)

Dash - 3.5inch speaker

Front Door - 5 1/4

Rear Door - 6 1/2

Rear Deck - 6x9

Sounds good and all yea?

Well, the 93 had pioneers in the back, and i put nice kappas in the front(dash and door)

All of this was ran off the headunit, which, is fine for me. In the future ill get a 4 channel AMP and rewire the whole car for it with bigger wire. But that's way down the line.

Well this car, being a 96 850R , has a lovely Amp in it. I knew the stock speakers sounded ALOT better then they ever did when the 93 had them. So i move over the dash tweeter to the 96, a Kappa 32.7i i believe...these are about 2 years old, and are the 2 ohm speakers. Speakers still worked, everything was fine. defnitely louder and probably the most bass ive ever seen those 3.5s deliver LOL. Too bad thatll be gone soon.

Today i go to move over the 5 1/4's for the door. Get them put in. Keep in mind these are 52.7is or w/e kappas that are 2 ohm.

Turn on radio.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPpppp

Yea. Front channel doesnt not like the low impedance. not at all lol

Turned the fader to the back and turned it up, you get the rear channel all good and happy. But you cant stop the EEP lol.

So, i know what this means. Too much load for that stock amplifier. Which i had figured.

For the rear, i have bought the newer kappas, 693.3i and 63.9i or w/e the 3 ways are for the rear. i'm leaving the pioneers in the 93. Now these being newer, say they are 4 ohm compatible moreso, although are still said to be 2 ohm but i guess have a little bit more resistance in them then the other speakers. I have NOT installed these yet, as i havent had too much time to get back there and drill and make holes for the new grilles, cause i know these wont fit in the rear grilles unfortunately =p i know the pioneers didn't in the 93.

So after a bit of searching, i had always figured i had the amp, and of course confirmed it with the 6 pin din etc etc. Went ahead and just unplugged it from the radio for now. i gotta clean up back behind there, past owner never took the car apart which is great, but 12 year old foam is messy haha.

Now, i have the harness from crutchfield, which of course, would be simplistic if this amp was not there. Oh yea he installed subwoofers in this car with the stock HU (yuck...i hate HLI) so i'm sure this is all going to be interesting.

Long story short: I want to remove the amp completely, and am going to run the speakers directly off the headunit. Yes i understand the amp has more power, but i dont think that amp can handle the 2ohms. The crutchfield harness appears to run the dash tweeters in series i believe, since they did work in the 93 and that has the crutchfield harness. I am assuming the rear is already wired in series, since the stock harness has no location for rear door speaker ,only rear speakers, unless i am mistaken. So everything is fine IF i can get the stock stock harness, like the ones in any car without an Amp.

The amp i have been told is behind or infront or near the heater core. I am unsure how to remove it, and once i do remove it what then? Some posts it seems that the stock stock harness is actually plugged into the Amp, and i can just remove the Amp, and theres the stock stock harness, and i just plug that into the crutchfield harness and install it like any other radio. If this is true, Then this should be an easy job. If not, i am unsure how im going to use the crutchfield harness, or even how if i need to run these in series at some point.

If i can get some good ole VS feedback on this, hopefully i can make the dummies guide to those of us with the fun of the stock Amp. I'd love to rewire the whole car with some nice 12 gauge wire, but heh, ive got 3-4 years and much more important things for the car first. yargh.

Oh and dont tell me to sell the speakers LOL...i know infinity kappas are not the best, but, i enjoy their highs, and until klipsch gets into the car radio market, im SOL.

Thanks guy's. I am very longwinded. If you read all of this, let me know if i should be an author =p

When I put in my radio I just disconnected the amp hooked up the new radio and no place to plug in the amp so it stayed disconnected. Never had any problems, other than the factory speakers breaking up due to volume.

There was a topic recently about the amp, I've heard that aftermarket radio's won't work in cars with factory amps and both of my 850's have had them and I've never had an issue with aftermarket HU

Unfortunately, that makes no sense in this situation LOL

IN a car with the AMP, the 2 connectors to the sc-815, are not there. There is only one connected, the one for the power. I am not sure if the dash speakers are part of the cord or not either. If i unplug the 6 pin din, there is no more speakers, but i do not remeber if i rehooked up my dash speakers or not LOL. So where exactly are you "unplugging" the amp? That is my question. Because the 2nd connector to the sc-815, contains all the speakers. If i can find that connector, life would be grand. And i have no intention of keeping the amp or running the speakers off of it.

Thanks maybe you can enlighten me on how you've been wiring your speakers to the new headunits? I have read of some people finding the 2nd connector plugged into the amp itself...but i for some reason doubt that is true LOL...but hope that it is!

Dig around behind the HU for foam wrapped connectors...

You should find the "amp out" to "speaker harness" connectors buried in there.

Unplug, connect aftermarket wiring adapter, rock out, Repeat.smile.gif

I saw those yesterday when i was digging around but was unsure if those were right....

Looked they were going to under the steering wheel lol!

Awesome i will take a look next chance i get!

I see no reason to remove the amp (atleast right now..could be useful in the future ? =P) if i can do this haha

Thanks for your help man i'll let ya'll know, and hopefully take pics incase anyone else is clueless like me hehe
