ylstaffer
I have a 98 V70 with a regular gauge cluster and was wondering if installing a cluster with the info feature is a plug-and-play arrangement? Is there an extra computer somewhere that goes with it? Also, if I replace my cluster is it possible to change the mileage on the odometer or even change out the odometer itself? Thanks!!! --Aaron--
AFAIK the mileage is programmed in the cluster and is not transferable. You can swap in an INFO activated cluster, add the switch and you're good to go!
ylstaffer
Yep, it's that stinkin simple! Amazing. Would be nice to somehow adjust the mileage so that it's accurate. Dealer might know. Anyway, thanks!
--Aaron--
I agree, I am lacking the INFO feature as well and would really like to have it. You could either source an INFO switch and pay the dealer ~190 to activate the feature in your cluster OR swap in a cluster as we just said and add the switch. If I could keep my exact mileage, I'd have the feature right now.
ylstaffer
Got a cluster from a local pick-n-pull for $15 (including info switch) and put it in and it works like a charm. But yeah, wish the odometer was accurate. If the dealer can add the info option they must be able to manipulate the mileage somehow. I'll stop by there tomorrow and ask. --Aaron--
Excellent! Glad it worked for you. Let us know what you find out at the dealer. :D
ylstaffer
So I stopped by the dealership today and asked the service tech if they could manipulate the mileage on these odometers and he flatly said 'no'. Due to odometer laws etc this is not possible, and since the failure rate of these units is so low it's seldom an issue. If they do replace a unit they are required by law to attach a sticker somewhere on the car stating that this swap was performed on this date with this many miles on the odometer. He asked about the miles and I told him that the car had more than what the new odometer stated and he smiled and shook his head and mumbled something about 'crazy Volvo owners'.
