hgray14
When I start one of my 1995 850 Turbos I hear a whinning coming from under the hood. It isn't a fan belt kind of whine; it is more high-pitched than that. I don't notice any difference in performance but am figuring that something might be getting ready to go out. Any ideas of what to check? thanks Houston
NoodleKnight
Check your oil pressure and listen for valve tapping. Other than belt whine the next common source is generally the oil sump o-rings. When it's cold it lets air get sucked into the oil pump which causes your whining.

Will higher or lower pressure signal bad oil sump o-rings? How hard are they to replace? I don't think this is just a cold morning kind of thing but I will run some tests and see. Thanks again! Ihatespeedbumps
try pulling the dipstick and see if the noise changes.
hgray14
try pulling the dipstick and see if the noise changes. The next time it happens I will give that a shot. If the noise changes does that mean the sump o-rings need replacing? ...and is it easier to replace the rings or the whole unit? thanks again

Low oil pressure is (usually) a sign of worn out oil sump o-rings, assuming everything else is fine. The sound is generally worsened by cold weather (shrink's the o-rings slightly) but you don't need to have cold weather to have the problem. In general when you cold start you'll hear the noise and it'll go away as the car warms up, but again not necessary, my car made the noise all the time and had random bouts of lifter tick even when the engine was at operating temps. Also if this noise isn't coming from the front of the engine (passenger side) then it's probably not your oil sump o-rings since the sound emanates from your oil pump.
