VAVolvo
On NA engines (at least the 850's) there is this vent coming off the heat shield over the manifold that connects to the back of the air box. Inside the air box itself, there is a valve gate that changes the flow of air to the air box. The whole reason why they put that warm air vent (according to a friend of mine) is to help the car start when it's cold. But, as many of us know, it is better to have colder air to the intake because it is more dense, giving it a bit more horsepower. This is what I did.I got an old air box from a junked 850 and took out the two way reciever which connects the warm air vent and the outside air vent to the air box. I then looked around for a hose or vent that I could rig from the front of the car to the box, I was not happy with any of the things I tried, so I used what I had.I opened up the two-way reciever and cut out the valve and anything that abstructs the airflow to the box mostly with a dremel tool and sand paper. Then I taped off the warm air vent so I'm only getting cold air from the outside. I used the stock vent that they have coming from the fromt of the car to the air box.Next, there is this lip down front that, I think, obstucts the outside air from going directly into the vent so I cut that out. Finally, I custom made a box cover to keep warm air from getting to the intake. Basiclly for that, just took the old air box cover and cut just enough to let the intake hose in the box and cut a little notch on the other side for the mass air flow cord which is connected to the sensor. It's basically my own design which most of the ideas came from you guys. Otherwise, I think I would have left the cone filter just sit there in the box open to warm air generated by the engine itself.Questions, comments, feel free to give. In truth, I don't think it made a BIG difference, but it's just a "peace of mind" sort of thing. Personally, I felt a bit of difference and there is always something more I could do to improve upon it.Thankyou!

patrick
its a great mod, easy way to free up some NA hp. 'if you do a search i have been talking about it for years make sure you plug the holes in the bottom of the airbox from where you took the flap thing out. Mesoam
Also, get some hose (i just used an old rad hose in our basement) and re-route the exhaust mani vent outside of the engine bay.Yes it makes a difference. Rich a while back was talking about how it will take longer for the car to warm up, and that is def true as well.
patrick
yea that is a good point, altely its finally starting to get cold here, i noticed already and in previous seasons since that it definately does not run as well until a couple minutes later in driving. i like to give it ~30 seconds before even taking off now if its pretty cold. maiku
it does take forever to warm up in the morningsbut i think the extra power is worth it, even if it is a minimal gainif it does get bloody cold, i may reroute it back

Or could I just plug it up?
Mesoam
no, no plugging. I'll take a quick picture of what i did. Find a tube that fits tight or get one and use a clamp and route it towards the ground

Mesoam
the hose is tight in there and the piping exits the bay then points at the ground
Nebor
I don't see any reason not to just plug it up... The exhaust will just go out the exhuast pipe...
Mesoam
i'm sure your idea will work but its excess heat on the exhaust manifold. Will you notice the difference? ------> no...is it a nice peice of mind ----> yes
