Running High Boost On High Compression Engines

Recommended Posts

Hey gents, after the dyno day, I learn a few things about my car and also these Foucs XR5/ST'S and the tunes they are running. Now, I am personally against this tune and we had a little talk about it in another thread with Don Norchi from Kalmar Union but I honestly wanted professional opinons on this issue as I believe these guys, which have the same engine as the C30 T5, s40 T5 etc which we know to be high compression, low boost engines are running too much boost for their engines and I think slowly damaging their engines.

They are running over 1.2 Bar of boost, not possible to tell as thats all the gauge goes up to, some engines seem to be pinging, and their are guys running race tunes, for expample, stage 2 or 3 IPD or RICA tunes on stock cars without the mods for that tune. Most people are using these as daily drivers and the guys with FMIC,CAI, DP etc would be boosting to 19psi easy with the DS tunes. While the low compression, high pressure engines could handle this sort of boost easier, they are running too much boost and the small turbo's would be running out of breath over 16-17 psi anyway so whats the use?

The Swedish tuners such as TME, BSR, RICA offer tunes for thse cars but don't offer as much peak Hp or Torque but have more area under the graph so they are better tunes overall, they are getting massive torque down low, then it just drops, a few guys were getting misfiring at these torque spots and the ECU would momentarily switch off and on again due to pinging and probably a torque limiter of some sort.

Also, a few guys have damaged engines running these tunes, such as melting pistons etc.. due to overheating.

Anyway, hope to hear your opinions.

Thanks, Oli.

If you are boosting to high and start to knock and then need to retard spark because of it you could certainly be loosing a lot of potential. You would most likely be better off lowering the compression and making up the torque with more advanced spark timings.

Spot on there Info2x.

Heres what the tuner said.

Hi Guys

Thought I would try answer the questions thus far, right

1) Pinging, it is impossible for the ST / XR5 to detonate, this is a Euro 4 car and it performs a background missfire test on a single cylinder at random every few seconds until it detects the pre-resonance of Knock and then pulls back a safe distance and sets this as the MBT mean brake torque point. This is how the car can detect the grade of fuel you use. I would imagine if you happened to have the crapest fuel on earth in the car and you have alot of modifications it may be possible to hear a knock but I have never heard of this in 3 long years of tuning these cars?

2) This custom tuning shop you are talking about, they can use the dreamscience handset but would have to wipe all the tune files you have to do it. Most of the SCT dealers have our value files anyway as we made them in the UK for SCT and this will be what your dealer uses to build your custom tune, unless they have crammed 2 years of testing and experience in to a few weeks and have their own value files?

3) We feel our tune files are safe and we have won every independant test in the UK, they are generic so correct a GOOD custom tuner will be able to squeeze perhaps a couple more Bhp but mostly will only be able to customise the map to suit driving style. Remember the tuners over there would not have seen a calibration like this before as it is Euro 4 and 2 megs insize and it takes a very long time to find the combinations of tables which are safe and that make a difference.

We have decided to specialise in the ST and the new RS in the UK and Europe as we have such a strong reputation for delivering reliable performance and offering new and innovative products to make our cars faster, the rolling road day is always a difficult one as people make many opinions and comments which are often founded on little to no knowledge and unfortunately some believe them. This happens here all the time and most people just ignore dyno day results now as they are so varied from one tuning shop to another ;)

Cool, didn't know that. I thought they'd be less, apparently BSR has one with 450Hp ATW, not sure what turbo they are running on it, but I think the price of the BSR, RICA and TME tunes being much more expensive is the reason no one down here is trying them out, also with the DS unit, they can take it to a experiences Ford tuner and get a custom remap, which is something we cannot do with our Volvos, well ME7 anyway.
