Tires!

Recommended Posts

okay, so i bought some Borbets for my t-5r and they're 18X8. i bought some tires for them today in size 225 40 18. Now i have doubts about the size, cause when i held them up to my stock wheels they're bigger (rolling height-wise). if some of you dont know, the stock tire size for a t-5r is 205 45 17. i also have H&R springs on there that are said to lower the car 1-1.2". my questions are: did i just basically buy wheels/tires that will re-raise my car that 1+ inch i'd dropped it with the H&R's? anyone else running the 225 40 18 setup with any issues (rubbing, turn radius, etc)? should i have gone with 35 profile since i'd gone 2 sizes wider? just lookin to see if this is okay before i put them on... thanks. oh, and lastly, anyone have experience with the kuhmo ecstas? they good? i have the SPT's

not sure but I always thought that 18 was bigger then 17... and with only a drop of 5 in the sidewall, yea they are going to be bigger. They "should" stretch a little on the rim, but if I were you I would expect some rubbing. Especially at full or close to full lock.

I ran them on this....

....for ~10K miles and was very pleased with them. IMO They're one of your average budget tires that will not leave you disappointed. I only lost 1/32 tread on all 4 when I removed them prior to selling the car. :D

My first 6 MT, RIP. :(

I was getting ~550 miles to 18 gallons of gas on them as well.....that is why I went w/ the 2.5S instead of a 3.5 V6. On the stockers the car was getting ~650 miles to a tank!!!

SPT is a good tire, you will most likely rub a bit at full turning lock because a 215 tire rubs at full lock lowered on ipd springs. With a 35 series you might have avoided the rubbing but that tire is very thin. I think you got the correct size just be careful when turning tighly

I thought stock was 215/50/17 on an R

18X8 lowered may rub, they might stick out a little past the fender and if there is not much clearance from top of tire to fender it will cut up your tire,

You may need to roll the fenders.

DO NOT GO BELOW 40 profile, that is unless you enjoy cracking rims. Or have super powers and are capable of avoiding all potholes and other road mishaps,

AND the lower profile tire will compensate for any increased ride height.

You increased the spring stiffness rate(with sport springs). which in turn did lower your car as a by product. But its the stiffer spring that is the main benefit(of course lower center of gravity is nice too )

i cracked some Antera 18x8 and after that switched back to 215/50/17 tried 215/45/17 not much difference , so I decided for a little more rim protection.

And yes kumho are a decent budget performance tire, I have run Bf good G force, Bridgestone potenza, and toyo, and would not hesitate to get some kumhos.

The stiffness of the struts may be a factor in rebound adn clearance when you hit a dip in road. and whether you will rub on top of fender

no, the stock for an R is 205 45 17 (thin). what im not understanding is that the aspect ratio of a 45 profile tire being only 205 in width makes the sidewall thin to begin with. if you do the tire size calculator, you'll see that you can keep the profile the same, but if the width goes up, the profile slightly increases as well.. SO, if you were to get 225 45 17, the sidewall is actually taller (even though its still 45) than it was on 205's. the rolling height of the 205 45 17 is identical to the rolling height of a 225 35 18 - so i'd avoid rubbing with the 35 profile tire. i know they're thin, but the borbets i have are multi-spoke (15 spoke) not some cheap ADRs or no-namers. how are porsche and ferrari running 35 profile without worrying about bends? or guys using 19"s? im thinking if i stay with the 225 40 18, i'll rub over bumps, AND the distance from the top of the tire to the fender may have dropped with the H&Rs, BUT the distance from the ground to the body of the car will be back to stock due to the taller height of the 40. anyone running 35's with bending and/or cracking issues? the 35's dont come with the load a 40 comes with.. i'd have to get 87Y (as opposed to 92Y on a 40 profile tire)
