I too would like to know if anybody has any other suggestions as I'm dealing with the same p0442 issue, but I have yet to replace the purge valve or lines. If the purge valve fails, is it closed, opened, or what happens? bad idle? horrible gas mileage. Monkito, are you getting any other codes?

2001T5
Look underneath the car, in the passenger wheel well. I think it's right behind your gas fill tube thingy (<-- tech terms for ya )

64pvolvo1800
I'm going to look again this evening. Its not by the fuel filter is it? it's either in the front of the drivers wheel well or on pass side just in front of the rear wheel/by the wheel. Newbie here with same 442 code. Can an amateur like me replace this hose? maybe monkito can show us step by step procedure. ( thanks monkito) and point out the exact defective hose. I can see at least three hoses down in there, all of them hard to get to. Thanks in advance

No. That is for x70 cars. The canister and J hose are located on top of the rear suspension near the rear muffler.

Is this where it would be on an 04 V70? I have the PO442 and the dealer suggested I replace the Leak Detection Pump, but the J hose might actually be the problem and it's a cheaper solution. 2001T5
Man it seems like there are a lot of these lately.... http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/123027-cel-code-po442-dealer-cel-codes-ecm-404c-ecm-431d/ Man it seems like there are a lot of these lately.... http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/123027-cel-code-po442-dealer-cel-codes-ecm-404c-ecm-431d/ Oops... This is easy as long as you have a lift. 1) Remove the exhaust (cat back I think) 2) Remove the heat shield This should give you access to the canister and J hose. I am working on my 2001 V-70XC... i have had this same code P0456 - EVAP Emission Control System Leak (very small) for a long time... The Charcoal Canister is viewable from underneath the car. I have pressed the said J Connection and it seams to click in. Have you actually replaced the entire hose. The Connection at said J hose is made of plastic and i imagine in order to replace the connection point you would have to replace the entire Pvc tube. regards

Common failure and you probably need the pump/...however it usually sets a specific code in my experience.
