Dash Lights

Yes, you need to take out the cluster to replace its bulbs. It is actually easy although it seems like a lot of steps.

the best way is to remove the top dash, then you do not damage anything, see http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/20404-howto-take-off-top-dash-cover/

but some people just pry up one side of the dash like in this link http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/odometer_fix.php

I agree, remove the dash cover, it's not that much more (easy) work, and you won't run the risk of bending the "downturn" (that's just to the right of the middle vents) out of shape.

I had a volvo dealer replace some dash bulbs a few years ago and they screwed up that corner of the cover by just lifting the left hand side of the dash cover -- left it sticking out 1 inch away from the face panel. I finally fixed it when I replaced my odometer gears, but I haven't gone to a dealer since then.

OK, a few of my gauge lights have gone out so after i couldn't figure out how to get to them I looked in my Haynes manual. there has to be a easier way to get to the bulbs. do I really have to take apart the whole front end of the car?

Depending on that what bulbs you need to replace....you might try from above. You need to remove the plastic panel underneath the wheel(there are 4 torx bolts as i recall)and slip between wheel and floor.

As i remember there is just one bulb which i couldn't reach....it's right one for board computer(clock)...if you're looking from above it's left one, just near the "winter flake" at instrument cluster.

So...removing the whole dash for replacing bulbs isn't the only solution.

Good luck whatever you decide to do! ;)

I take it you meant from below. Probably would work for those with small hands.

I heard it can be done that way, and I always thought the challenge would be the bulb(s) for the info LCD because I know there is a recess at the back of the the cluster where the bulb for it is installed.
