Mounting My Sub

The Reverend

Recommended Posts

I am going to mount my sub in my trunk today. I decided against the velcro thing because I just don't want to worry about it. Bing told me to use L brackets. I bought some of those. Here is my question: what precautions to I need to take so I don't destroy my box? How do i safely drill into it? Should I only drill through wood, or it is ok if I drill all the way through the box?

Also, how do I use self tapping screws?

Thanks

Colin

Colin,

What size MDF is your box made of? I'd guess 3/4" , so don't get any screws to drill into the box that are longer than 3/4" . Use a good wood screw, where you drill a pilot hole (take the screw your're going to use, and then select a drill bit that is the same size as the screw, MINUS the threads of the screw, so if you hold the drill bit behind the screw, you can't see the drill bit) into the box first, then screw in the screws. you can countersink the hole too, so the head of the screw is "sunk in" to the box, for an added comsmetic improvement. What are you using the self tapping screws for?

The self tapping are for installing my kicks up front. I have to drill through the metal, but Bing said just to use self tapping screws.

Oh ok, self tapping screws are ususally used for thin metal, where you don't have enough metal to actually tap a hole. The self tapping screws will work fine, just drill a small pilot hole in the metal, using a drill bit that i described in my first post to your question. Then use em like you normally would. Remember tho, with a self tapping screw, the more time you remove and install them in the same hole, they won't hold as well in the hole as well as the did the first time. Rather, the hole in the metal will enlarge with each removal a smidge, making the fit poorer.

sorry for all the long winded responses, it's hard to explain these types of things in words. :D

So I definitely cannot drill all the way through the box? Man, this is so stressful, lol, I am scared to drill that pilot hole.

Just do this.. if your box is 3/4" thick, take your drill bit, and put a piece of tape on the drill bit that is 3/4" from the tip of the bit, that way you're GUARANTEED not to go through and hit a wire or sub or anything.

I used L brackets to hold my subs in the wagon....i just drilled into the floor, and not into the boxes...the boxes stay tightly against the back seat, and don't move side to side at all....I used a total of 6 brackets...I have two sub boxes for my 2 12's....one on the front of each box, one on the outside of each box, and one on the inside of each box.....my amp is mounted in the middle on one box....i'll get pics in a minute...

you can see the L brackets there....on the front of the boxes, toward the inside of the two boxes (barely visible, but there if you look closely), and the toward the outside of each box (can't be seen, but they're there)...hold them in place, and all I did was drill into the floor, not into the boxes...the brackets won't turn as long as they are tightly placed against the box...

enjoy!

-Pras...oh, I need to cut down my sub boxes so they go with the slant of the seats, so that's gonna happen when I'm back, so no comments on that please!

in my experince, i have never had an issue with a screw into a box cuasing the destruction of the box, my advice would be to use l brackets, self tappers into the floor, and then 1" screws into the box, the screws will not affect your sound or the longevity of the box, when the screw go in, they pretty much seal around the hole...

its such a small thing that i wouldnt worry about it. if you really are anal that way, go wtih 1/2" screws, but i will say one thing, i woudlr ather have a micrometer of airleak around the holes (whcih causes nothing), rather than have the box fly around in case of an accident or fliping hte car.

yeah, if my car flipped or went over something really hard and bounces, my subs would probably fly upwards, but with braking and accelerating, etc, there is no movement....i have my amp screwed into the box, and no sound problems at all...i just didn't screw the L brackets into the box because I needed to be able to remove the boxes with minimal effort....basically, i'm lazy!
