Rear Hatch Mechanism Broken

Hey guys,

Haven't been on here in quite a long while. Still running my 98 v70 T-5m like it were brand new, you know except of course except for the fact that it's 11 years old haha. So I had an incident where a rock went through my rear windshield from traffic (horrible I know), and the glass was replaced. The trunk worked fine say about for 4 days. Then the day I go for a film shoot with a ton of gear in my car it won't close. This poses a huge problem to me. I am about to start filming and need to transport over $100k worth of gear and I can't be tying down my rear gate. Needless to say, I need to fix this tomorrow.

To be specific with the problem, the rear gate won't latch because of the locking mechanism. the U shaped bracket that positions itself around the metal rod is intact, however the piece that then rotates out of the U and locks into place has come loose. If I lift the gate up and look at the U and try and move the rotating piece around, it does so very easily. I can just move it around and it will NOT lock into place like it normally would if the gate were being pushed down. I also tried to put the gate down and manually lock the door with the key, and with the electronic lock; this did not work.

If anyone has experienced any problems with this and could shed any light on the topic that would be great. I tried searching, but I didn't find anything that could help (all this time and i still know forum etiquette.

Thanks

-Brendan

Mine did the same thing about a yar and a half ago. you need to replace the latch. I don't remember the price i paid... but I just used rubber tie down straps in the tailgate to the cargo tie downs right behind the seat to hold the hatch closed until i got the latch replaced. I just got the part and did it myself. the hardest thing was getting the inside latch to work properly. (i have a 3rd row) and there are 2 latches to choose from (3rd row and no 3rd row)

Good Luck!

Mike

Sounds like a piece of glass got into one of the plastic actuated locking pins and is keeping it unlocked. Remove the panel, open the hatch wide, and give the lock a few bangs with the bottom of your palm. I have used a screw driver to push the lock closed to the second click, then unlocking it with the handle.
