13G >>15G Swap 98V70Glt

Recommended Posts

So I am going to swap out my 13 for a 15 later today but I want to make sure there are no conditions I should avoid afterward. I am lead footed and tend to push it pretty hard. With the added boost am I running any risk of bending shit? I am not changing the tune at all, I would just like a) to find out for sure that my turbo is the reason I smoke on a hot restart, and B) to have a bit more of the T5 boost feel when I get on it!. That having been said, this is an automatic whereas my T5 is a stick. Will I be punishing my tranny and setting up failure on a 165k mileage car?

What kind of HP gain am I looking at? 190 stock GLT, 236 on the T5, I figure maybe 220?

I'm headed to breakfast and I'll check back before I swap it out this afternoon. I have all my coppers and gaskets and new water hoses and seal for the lines. I doubt I need anything else but if there are any other recommendations to make the job easier I'm listening.

Thanks for the help and advice you guys always throw out there.

I will NOT be listening to Justins advice however.....my V is SILVER and I know he will have ulterior motives

Grim Reaper motives

Well, the GLT has a different compression ratio (as i found through argument) than the T5, so I dont know how much of an impact that will make. And the most i've read about on here would be all the air hoses should be inspected/replaced with silicon.

Do you have a T-5 ECU for it? I would think that with the higher compression you would have more power with the 15G and T-5 ECU.

The higher ratio is exactly why I am asking the question. I dont want to put an ECU that thinks it's a T5 and acts accordingly and blows the engine. I'm just gunshy and hoping this isnt a mistake.

Either way, the damage is done, turbo is in, cooling system bled, warmed up and toasted all the oily hand prints off the exhasut system and now its time to run it and see the difference. Seat back dyno, here I come.

update, I just got back. Looks like a modest gain in performance. It doesnt slam you to the seat like my T5 does, but it is a heavier car and of course it's NOT a T5 16T either. It does have a lot more pep than the 13G did that's for sure. All in all, I'm pleased.

Nice to see you got the turbo in without any issues. You will be fine running the 15G. When my 13C went on my 940 turbo I replaced that with a 16T and was also running 10PSI of boost. Yes, the LPT engine is a high compression then an HPT(T5) engine, but it is not like it is an NA motor or anything.

Put a T5 ECU in it. My son's '98 XC is running the T5 ECU & 12psi. 200K on the motor.

My '98 LPT motor ran 15psi on the IPD tune/ 16T motor was fine.

Hussein, thanks for your input. I was hoping you'd jump in.

I'm actually wondering if I should go to the 16T and a T5 ECU then. I really like the T5M although I realize with my auto I'll never get the same feel.

How's the leg man?

The leg is healing well. My knee's kinda creaky in the AM, but gets better once I move around.

You should be able to find a auto T5 ecu for around $60 - that's what NGB typically sells them for, I paid that from another VS

member.

My son & I were driving side by side the other day when I had a customer's '00 XC - his '98 left me way behind on a roll
