scottn941
Group - Is it possible to paint the textured bumper trim on the 850 to match the body color if it is done by a body shop? If so, has anyone done this and does look pretty good when finished? Thanks, -Scott
DHV70
Yes. It takes a special kind of paint, and it takes a different style of prep work, but its possible.
t5jim
Actually, any automotive paint works just fine. Clean them VERY good, lightly scuff with a greay scotch pad and a sanding compound such as PPG DX101,apply an adhesion promoter such as Bulldog, and spray! there are no special paints necessary for this project. Ive done tons of them and Ive been a bodyman longer than most members have been alive! Heres one of my 850s painted to match!By far,one of the best body mods you can do for these cars.Do it right and remove both bumpers and all mouldings, dont paint them on the car. youll get a cleaner job and while your att it paint the whole bumper, front and rear, and you can get rid of any knicks and scratches at the same time! ryan850-t5
It definitely can be done like others have said. You can look in this thread to see an example. Painted Moldings I did a little more prep work than t5jim but I'm sure adhesion promoter method would work too. I took off all my moldings as well as both the front and rear bumper and then I sanded them down using, from what I remember, 220, 320, 500, primer, 500, 800, paint. I wanted to get the textured look out. I also used regular paint, nothing special.

Listen to this man! He knows his stuff. I had my body shop do it. Nothing fancy, adhesion promoter and maybe some flex agent. One warning though, if your paint is very tired and faded, the new trim paint will just make the faded paint show more. In that case, have them mix paint to match yours instead of going with the factory "new" color mix.

Been doing this stuff for years and most of the time people will think that altering plastic is harder than it actually is!
bobbyblue
Sorry to semi hijack, but I need to repaint / coat the windshield / roof trim on my 855. It has some sort of thick rubber black coating that is coming off in pieces. How can I redo these? Thanks
