Volvo Code Readers

pretty much any typical obdII will work with the OBDII cars. But not the volvo-specific codes, and unless you're looking to spend some serious money then you won't find one that will.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard some will not work with the 2000 S70? I would like to get as much info as possible with or without a laptop connected but can't seem to get straight info as to what will work. Not sure if it needs to be OBDII or CAN or ISO XXX or PFM. And of course I don't want to spend more than I need to but want as much technology as I can get.

I just got the BSR PPC for Volvo. It is downtown. I have a 1999 S80 and it read 17 codes where my regular OBDII reader had 4 codes it pulled out. It reads all the modules. It also resets the codes in all the modules and not just the ECM. It was $190 but wrth every penny. If your going to have a Volvo and do maintance, it is a must have.

One trip to the dealership and it will pay for itself.

Good Luck,

I just got one of these PPC from BSR. It read codes from every possible computer in the car. The codes it read, if I'm interpreting the data correctly, ranged from my alarm being activated and which door was opened, changing wiper blades, which button wasn't working on my climate panel, as well as the dreaded throttle unit.

I reset the codes and the car runs better. It idles smoother (so I think) and it also did something where my seat memory buttons now work. At this point, I'm very pleased with with diagnostic tool.

Too bad it doesn't work for all Volvos. I have a 99 S70, does not work with it, based on their website:

Vehicle coverage

PPC Diagnostic System works with all Volvo from 2001-2007.

Exceptions:

S80 1999-2006 works

S80 D/D5/TDI 1999-2000 does not work

C70 98-05 does not work

S/V40 96-04 does not work

Thanks to all for taking the time to answer. This is what I am up against, I hear things like 'any obd 2' and then I talk with someone or email a vendor and they say no way. I don't mind laying out the green but don't want to buy something that works great for every car but mine.

BTW I sent an email to BRS and asked specifically if it works with my car. I will post what the say.

Launch x341 will work very well, this is also $2500 :)

I have one on order.

They are OK but butt slow

What code readers work with which models and years?

Why not tell us what year and model you want to scan

Sorry I thought I mentioned it, tt is a 2000 S70 GLT. I just bought it with 157K on the clock and 40K on the motor. Runs out very nice and I want to do some stuff to it, but first and foremost is getting to know what I have.

I received a reply from Palmer Performance, they indicated their Scan-Elm XL works with the '00 S70 and that they are planning to release an update for enhanced Volvo checks in the next couple of months. Anyone have experience with this product? What about the DashDyno? Anyone using that?

Mr Winkey, did you use one before? I ordered one and found that for a general all pourpose scan tool this fit the bill. if i am making a bad choice please chime in. if you are basing the butt slow thing off a old unit that did not have the new touch panel and the bluetooth support then i understand. the older ones were butt slow. i only tested out one that the salesman had. i can cancel my order if you say this thing is a POS. these new launch is really nice escpecially when i can go into the climate control and scan for errors, when i can scan my convertible top's codes and functions. its most valuable when i trip a SRS light a 2008 Mercedes S550, or a service electrical system failure message come up on a 2006 Maseratti Quattroporte. These are dealer service code calls, i call a INDY out that resets codes for a living and he wacks me with a $90 bill to reset a SRS light on a 02 CLK430. Even on my POS 99 XC70, i swapped tranny's (message you about that one :D) and i did not have CEL codes but with the launch i was able to reset the adaptives. the car ran much better after that.

considering what Snap On wants for a "update" on their POS Modis ($1800 for euro and domestic coverage only, No asain) the Launch was a no brainer. it covers a to z down to dealer levels. how about we can turn off DRL's on the volvo's and program IN fog lights on those stupid chargers/magnums/300c.

NO your fine with the launch. It's no slower than the Modis.... Genesis.... or any other processor based scan tool.

I'm actually just disgusted with whats out there right now. I have multiple scanners and all serve a purpose along with their ups and downs. I'm pretty disappointed with Snap On and their information base on the foreign end all together these past few years.

OBDI was a good start but got to the point where #'s needed to be universal.

OBDII became a standard in 1996 and is getting to the beyond control point again on how manufacture's define those #s

OBDIII....My Version.....All this technology is still based on an "INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE" that dates to when?

;)

Same here with SNap On, they charge you $5000-8000k for their "top o line" scan toola and it can do everything the fat ass'd Snap On man says and you can get updates all the time. Well in 2006 when the new body escalades came out 2007 model, Snap On could not scan it, Launch did! Snap On's only positive is the fat ass will show up at your shop every week to get his "payment" on his tools that you finance for 2000 years and can never seem to pay it off !! LOL

well i should have my lauch with me @ the Volvo's @ Ikea event on the 12th of Sept. i get it by the end of next week!!:D
