To Din Or Double Din...

Royalty

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to upgrade my sound system and have been tossing around some ideas. Looking at my 850 i just so happen to have the perfect size opening for a double din radio.

This gives me limitless possibilities.

As we all know, the major downside to a double din in the 850 is once its done...it's done.

This doesn't bother me too much seeing as this is a 13 year old car and i'll more than likely be the last owner (maybe donate to a family member).

How many of you guys have done the DD swap and what has your overall impression be?

With that being said would you guys mind posting up pics of DD installs.

Tnx

Quite a few of us have them, Mine is a pioneer avic F series.

It has Bluetooth calling, Ipod control, Both can be controlled with voice commands and of course Navigation

Costs around 450$

And they look great. However, Keep in mind they are a tad flashy if someone looks into your car, Easily stolen

this is where you actually have to pony up some real dough and get a Eclipse AVN series DD head (ESN, Theft Protection Guarantee, 3 Year warranty) or a Kenwood with their Code Protection.

There is a way to put a code into the Pioneer AVIC F series radios too to prevent theft.

The DD swap is easily reversible. You can put the stock stereo back in even after you shave down the rails. It doesn't lock in place, but it won't slide around. Considering how cheap the non touch screen DD head units are, I don't know why anyone would go with a single din head unit. I have the Kenwood DDX512 with the bluetooth and KNA G510 Garmin nav and I love it.

Does this do anything other than make the radio useless if you don't have the code? Although the feature sounds cool, I doubt that a thief would actually change his mind about stealing the radio just because it's a model that the owner can protect with a code.

+ a million

The thief won't know until they try to install it somewhere else. They won't be able to use it but your dash is still fucked.... So what's the point really?

If your concerned with it being stolen get an alarm for the car and keep "protection" near the front door of your house(at least a bat)

LOL,

A code is useless for theft protection. Once its stolen the only comfort you will have is knowing the thief cant use it, But he wont be returning it and you still have broken glass everywhere and jacked up wiring.

THAT being said, I and others have made false radio covers. I used the stock radio faceplate. Dremeled out rough edges glued buttons in place and put a soft material in between the cover plate and the touch screen. Unless your in the car examaning it it appears ti be a stock radio.

most thieves know what they want.

Eclipse's Theft Guarantee, works like this. If with in the first year of ownership you get the unit ripped off, you provide receipt, police report and as long as your own insurance is not providing for a replacement Eclipse will replace it for free. As long as the unit was registered with Eclipse.

Codes are just for personal satisfaction. Kinda like a "fuck you" to the thief that stole it. plus the Eclipse is a great unit and Kenwood has a Garmin nav rebate that is now extended to sept 30. depending on model you save $100-150 bucks! thats ! you can get a DNX 6140 after rebate for around 800-900bucks!

$769 DNX6140 before you factor in the $100 rebate and I think there is a coupon code for free shipping for Sonic Electronix floating around somewhere.

please read the following before buying it online, warranty policy.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/warranty_policy.php

http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Support/Where_to_Buy/

rebate policy

**Offer excludes Best Buy purchases of Kenwood Entertainment/Navigation systems.

Sonix Electronix is not a authorized internet retailer, the rebate will NOT be honored. of course it will take you 6-8 weeks to find this out. :D warranty with KENWOOD will be another issue, so will firmware updates. Don't forget, internet can not provide you with installation experts and advice.

the problem with double din screens is u lose audio quality ur better off gettin a single din fold out screen kenwood the best screens for audio quality i am a audio fitter so i will be able to help with any questions or problems u have

Kenwood DNX-9140 will run circles around the KVT-514, the KVT-614 is close but no cigar. I do not know where you are getting your information but i must inform others reading this thread OP, his information is wrong when it come to Kenwood products.

Good luck in choosing a radio, its going to be tough with so many options out there and so many opinions.

PM me is you need pricing since i am a Authorized dealer for the following brands

Kenwood Excelon

Alpine

Pioneer Premier

Do not deal with the Duals, Power COustics, Phase Linier ect....the cheap lower end stuff, not that its bad stuff. there are just too many issues with those units.

Mr Scotty Z,

No one is here trying to have a pissing match with you.

No one is trying to say they are smarter than you.

No one is saying they know more than you.

To answer the Original Posters question, DIN or Double DIN?

I state, i am a Authorized dealer for those products. No where did i give an opinion on one brand or another.

I you really want to know how i feel about a certain product, you can contact me via Private Message and i can tell you.

I too also "run my own company installing stuff". I am a direct account with Kenwood Excelon USA, direct Alpine USA dealer, and a direct Pioneer Premier USA dealer. if you had any idea what it takes to become a direct pioneer dealer then you can imagine what kind of money we are talking about supporting three major brands. I know a little bit about car stereo, i'd say i don't know it all, i'd say i know enough to get by, i'd say i know what products i like and what i do not like.

As for the drugs, unless they are prescribed to me....i don't touch them.

I live by my quote "Never argue with a idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience." :D

was that English?

+1 i was trying to decipher the code too.
