2000 Cross-Country

Hello,

I have decided to switch from the Mercedes world to the Volvo world, and have really taken a shine to the V70 wagons. Though I'm looking for a V70 R or V70 AWD, the cross-country models seem to be everywhere, and more expensive for no reason I can tell. I have found a 2000 Cross-country in nice shape with complete service records for $2600 - but it needs a transmission! It has no reverse gear, which I have read to mean that it is going to lose forward gears soon. A local shop will put in a used transmission for $800 in labor, but I'm curious about a few things:

-Can I take this on? I've done a clutch and rear main seal on a VW with a VR6 before, so I know cramped engine compartments, but do you need to drop the subframe to get the transmission out of a V70?

-Is the AWD really worth it?

-Would a used transmission be a decent idea? I have seen lots of them for $600-700 with 100k on them. At a total cost with labor of $1600, if I'd get 80k out of a used transmission that seems like a good bet to me.

Thanks.

Thanks for that. :)

Is the AWD really more trouble than it is worth? I have driven Subarus and loved the AWD. I know the Volvo system isn't as good as that, but ... well, I want to spend around $5k on a decent used wagon with about 100k on it. Can I get a 98 in good shape for that? I have seen the odd late-90s Audi or Subaru in that range that didn't look like a total basket case.

The big issue with the 00 XC is its a single year AWD drive 5 speeed tranny .

Its total junk

Get a 98 or 99 or a 03+ XC and you will be tons happier .

00-02 are the worst tranny years for volvo since it was the first years for the 5speed auto compared to 99 and older it was always 4speed auto.

I dont care what JRL says about rebuilds but why spend $3k+ reubilding a tranny for a car thats only worth 5k tops in good working condition.

That and the AWD system IMO has to be the worst on any car just due to how picky it is with tire wear and such.

Unless you get Feet of snow just get a FWD and be much happier , one thing with the AWD thou you can remove the drive shaft and there will be 99% of your AWD problems but then you can run the car in FWD

Put it this way all my personal AWD cars are now FWD and Manual

The 2000 V70XC AWD has a 4 spd auto... pretty sure. It was the last good one before the 01 series came along.

I have it, works perfectly at 130K miles and counting.

? the last XC the black one had the 5 speed in it .

PRD32L

have to find a pic of it

as an owner of a 2000 V70XC, i can attest that they are definitely 4-speed automatics.

the normally aspirated 2000 70 series cars and the 2000 V70R received the 5-speed.

we had this same discussion earlier this year:

Thanks, I am now looking for a non-basket-case Audi or Subaru with low miles (Subaru for simplicity, Audi because I already know modern VWs), or a FWD Volvo. I am thinking a 98 makes the most sense for simplicity's sake.

04 xc70 150k $6500 for sale locally, not my car, just something i saw in a local ad recently. Audi All_road is going to be worse. god forbid you need to do the timing belt and water pump. $650 parts and $600-800 labor/fluids $1200+, my friend just had this done on his 01 A6 2.7t. Audi = no 7 passenger if that matters.

subi forester is close to the xc70, 4 banger and non-turbo. every brand has their strengths and weaknesses.

good luck in your search

I'm thinking one of the last of the Audi C4 platforms, maybe a 1996-1997 A6 Quattro. Those were available in 7-passenger, though that doesn't really matter to me. The 2.8 isn't a mileage or performance king, but it's very reliable. I know to stay away from the Allroad and the 2.7T, there's a reason you can get them super-cheap. The 1.8T is okay but prone to sludging. Apart from a few stupid access problems (no access to center diff fluid fill/drain without dropping exhaust, lots of work for timing belt) the C4 doesn't seem too bad.

Subbies are nice, but I can't stand the looks of the Forester, so it would have to be a Legacy or Outback. They are hard to find in good shape for anything inside the budget I'd like to keep. If I'm spending $8k I'll get a nice XC with a recent transmission rebuild.
