sks40
My V50 T5 is leaking some kind of fluid on the passenger side of the engine bay right around the motor mount. The fluid is red-ish brown and seems to dry leaving brown stains (not oily). It does not look like coolant since mine is green. Other fluid levels look good (PS, brake, oil). I can't easily get to the tranny dip stick so I don't know. I called Volvo service and they said that it was tranny fluid, however, I am not convinced. I thought that the tranny cooler was on the other side and I have not known tranny fluid to evaporate. Could it be coming from the motor mount? Dave 54
Sounds like trans fluid, or could be the hydrualic mount leaking. I'd say check the trans. fluid level and if it seems up to par, start investigating the mounts.
sks40
The tranny fluid level is good. Though the tranny fluid looks the same color, it smells and feels different. Also, the tranny fluid does not evaporate like the fluid that leaked (I tried it). The car still runs great but is going under the wrench at Volvo service tomorrow. My money is on the engine mount. Is top rubber portion supposed to be firm? Mine is not. Stan
Ihatespeedbumps
runs great but is going under the wrench at Volvo service tomorrow. Stan I assumed you mentioned the fluid leak to the shop that is looking at the car?
sks40
I assumed you mentioned the fluid leak to the shop that is looking at the car? Aaaaaaa... yep. I thought about just dropping the car off and have them guess why it was there but I thought better of it . I also mentioned another problem that I have been having with the radio locking-up but that is another topic. While I was there, I took a look at the engine mount on a new S40 and it looks exactly like mine with the same pliability. If the fluid that was leaking was green instead of red, I would swear that it is coolant. My coolant is distinctly green though. BTW Dave 54, that is a sweet looking 850 you got there! sks40
Yeah, I;m really glad it wasn't tranny fluid. I was really surprised how much fluid came out of the thing. I also thought the fluid would have been much thicker, more like a grease. I attached some pics for reference. It really looked like ATF when it was wet.
