Kenwood Music Keg

Ok, so I have a Kenwood KDCX679 HU, which plays MP3 discs, and is Satellite Radio and High Def Radio ready.. but what I'm really interested in is it'sMusic Keg capabilities. I have around 9 thousand MP3's... and would love to be able to harness the music that I have on my computer and have it in the car. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences? It's only 250 bucks... seems like a good holiday score...

I'm hesistant because of the software that the program uses. I hate it when music programs try to take over your music collection, (ie Real Player or Windows Player). I'd hate to buy this and then be forced to use the Kenwood program to play my music instead of Winamp.

Your Thoughts?

This looks like a sweet product. Check out the Crutchfield Advisor Review. They also make a 20GB version. This is exactly what I want. Now it's time for me to search to see if Pioneer makes anything like this to go with my HU.

Hmmm...I wonder if you can get the 10GB version and swap in, oh I don't know, say an 80GB hard drive? :D

haha... research has brought me this:

"DMS Cartridge - 80GB

GIGANTIC music storage! An extra 80GB DMS Cartridge lets you load up hours (and hours and hours) of additional music for your PhatBox or Kenwood Music Keg; it's also useful to store and transport data between home and office computers using the PhatNoise USB Desktop Cradle.

DMS-080GF Rev$399.00"

Ouch!

Oh, and they make an RF modulator for guys w/o the Kenwood HU...

Kevin,

The Music Keg seems really expensive. 250 for only 10 gigs? Its too bad that you have the compatible HU already or I would look into an Alpine with the Ipod interface. 250 you could get a 20 gig Ipod and be able to take your music where you go as well. The interface isn't cheap though. I think around 100.

Stephen,

I think that 250 is super cheap for 2,500 Songs! You can upgrade too! (read: super expensive) I have a 6 gig mp3 player that I suppose I could hook up to my HU, but I like the idea of just being able to plug the cartridge into the car and go! I joined that forum, and I'm gonna feel out how the GUI is beofre I make a decision.

I guess the interface is nice. But 10 gigs is pretty tiny by todays MP3 storage standards. I would want at least 20.

true... the 20 giger is almost 5 hundo retail... which is a little too much.. I'm surprised more companies aren't developing/selling something like this. Rockford Fosgate's got something similar IIRC..

Ouch 500 bucks for 20 gigs. That will get you a 60 gig iPod.

I wonder why the markup is so high. I can't figure out what type of storage media they use. I looked like a 2.5" HD from the dimensions though. Shouldn't cost that much IMHO.

But I guess the interface is worth it. 10 Gigs looks like the way to go.

Yeah, I mean i don't think i'll have a problem with 2,500 songs at my disposal.. :D I bet it'll be cheaper than 250 bones closer to the holidays...

kevin driving down the road: "DAM! I wish I would have put that CCR album on there!" You always want to listen to what you don't have in the car!
