Caved In -Sending Sc901 To Alpine Tomorrow

OK I procrastinated; I just dropped the unit off at FEDEX today - they said it will take 2 days to get to NJ (Alpine repair center) so we will see what happens from here.

Good luck! I'll be intrigued to find out what they do to it, especially the firmware versions. Yesterday, the spring holding the cartridge flap closed sproinged out in my face, so I'm watching mine with caution and reserve - it may need attitude adjustment too.

I really dislike the look of aftermarket HUs. They always have too many things going on with them, and the ambient light is never correct.

I understand why he is keeping the stock HU.

My thoughts exactly. I love my stock HU because it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. It's simple to navigate and looks clean. I don't think the quality of the stock HUs are that bad either, as long as they have (at least) a factory amp installed.

Fedex tracking says it was delivered to Alpine on the 22th. I have been in Florida vacationing - Pier 60 Clearwater is AMAZING!!! Fish everywhere at the beach swimming around you and the water is relatively clear. Anyway no calls yet from Alpine and the unit hasn't been returned so hopefully they are repairing it and I will receive it this week.

Why did chick with the most amazing body setup on the beach right next to me and the young lady I went to FL with ???

I have to get back in the gym now!!!

Well ALPINE returned it marked as physically beyond repair :(.

Hello all,

Has anyone else received this response from Alpine? I have been considering several cheap 901's with non-functioning changer's, hoping to maybe have one refurbished. The seller states that the magazine will not eject from the unit and also that the CD's will not load from the magazine into the player. Sound like it's toast, or just in need of a good "reset"?

To the OP, what did yours do? I know the CD was inoperative, but what exactly were the symptoms that they could not repair it?

Thanks,

Joe

It, the CD Changer portion, never worked except for one day from when I bought my 1998 Saffron C70 over a year ago.

I bought a 1998 Cassis(sp) C70 a couple months ago to replace the Saffron after it was hit; The Cassis C70 has a SC900 however it's changer worked when i bought it - I got bold and tried to play a burned Audio CD in it - a few days later after that failed attempt it started jamming and now won't play any CDs however it will load and eject the cartridge.

In more detail - if I loaded a CD cartridge it would attempt to load and jam and then refuse to eject the cartridge completely and jam when attempting the eject process. One magical day I did get it to play a CD though.

Side note - One day I had a cascade of failures with the SC901 - the radio portion stopped working but the cassette deck kept playing if memory serves me correct; later that day the none of the sources worked. I unplugged the unit from the car and let it sit for at least 4 hours (overnight). I plugged it up next day and both the radio and cassette source have worked ever since without issue.

Maybe I need to unplug the SC900 overnight ? I am not 100% sure i have the correct security code for it though so I have been reluctant.

I thought about getting an Alpine "trunk changer" at one time; The current changer alpine sells now is DVD/CD "trunk" changer>>>DHA-S690, 6-Disc DVD/MP3/ACC/WMA/DivX Changer. I talked to Crutchfield and they said it should work with our headunit with the a specific adapter>>>Alpine KCA-130B (M-Bus to AI-NET) however the adapter has been out of stock but when I checked they would back order it for you.

Well ALPINE returned it marked as physically beyond repair :(. I thought for $150 they would just swap out all the moving components in the CD mechanism - call me naive.

I will possibly go the Eerie(sp) route since they claim a lifetime warranty. We will see...

Somehow I am not surprised given the age of components in the 901. A company on the UK board always posts about repairing these particular models, but I would think shipping alone would cost a pretty penny.

If all else fails you can send the unit to us.

Does having the ability to play cd's up front that important to you, or would a 6 disc changer be a workable solution?

Unfortunately, I don't think that crutchfield is quite right about this one.

I'm pretty sure that Volvo spec'd a slighty different handshake protocol for

their Volvo labeled Alpine changers. I do believe that it's gotta say "Volvo" on it.

For a while, refurb'ed SC-901's were showing up on eBay. I bumped up from a 900

with one of those. It's been flawless for nearly 4 years. Cost about $250, IIRC.

Factory packed. Even had protective film over the display window!

And there's always the Blitzsafe/USASpec solution...

Hello all,

Not sure about the DVD/CD unit in question, but I do know for a fact that the older Alpine 6-disc changer (CHM-S630) works very well with the SC-XXX head units. We've had one in the Wife's '95 850T since 2002 and it works (and sounds) absolutely perfect. All that was needed was the adapter cable (VOL-ALP). Both were purchased through Crutchfield. Anyway, the changer is now discontinued, but I would assume that as long as the newer model is still using the Alpine M-Bus protocol, it should work if Crutchfield says it will.

Good luck,

Joe

I wonder, will Alpine refurbish the unit if its still fully functional?

They may not do repairs, but will they do a software update or do some preventive maintanance (lube up stuff) on the CD Changer assembly?

I have a fully functional SC-901 and would like to keep it working as long as possible.

BTW, if you are having problems with it reading the disc, open the top cover up and using a Q-Tip (two Q-Tips stuck together with tape), reach in and clean the laser head (dry clean, do not use alcohol). This fixed the CD Changer for me, because my think would load nad eject, but wouldn't play any disc.

The CHM-630 is an M-bus changer and works fine with that adapter. The AI-net changer mentioned earlier would need the Alpine AI to M adapter, plus the VOL-ALP or similar adapter.
